just a quicky. do the bolts need to be high tensile or are the standard 8.8 ok? the question applies to all the bolts, ie the bolts throught the floor and the bolts that hold the different parts of the cage together.....

also, the coilovers ive got second hand, the bolts that go through the top arm and the top mount are well fubared... same question as above... do these need to be high tensile or will 8.8 be ok?

Cheers

Pete

I'd say it is worth using high tensile bolts for the cage, especially where two parts of the cage join together.

And for the coilover bolts definately use high tensile, think what will happen if one breaks....

8.8 are high tensile. 8.8 is what is specified in th Blue Book, so stick with that.

really will? i was under the impression that 8.8 were normal and 10.2 was high? wonder why i thought that?

regardless, if 8.8 is whats specified, then 8.8 is what it shall get, cheers for looking it up mate..... think i might get the nastiest oes i can for the suspension though....

thanks guys....

here is a little chart that I just googled.

http://www.roymech.co.uk/Useful_Tables/Screws/Strength.htm

yes, you can get stronger than 8.8, up to 14.9 it appears. But in my experiance you can generally get 4.8 and 8.8 from suppliers; 8.8 being considered the high tensile and 4.8 low.

I've never seen anything above 8.8; although they obviously exist.

Most decent capheads are usually 10.9 or 12.9, these are pretty common so I am suprised you have never come across any! These are what I use, especially for roll cage joints.

I work in the dark ages of the railway though Tom. where 8.8 is king. But I'll jkeep my eye out.

8.8s are easy up to the job though.

As far as I am aware 8.8 is standard automotive. I think I am right in saying that the SVA test only requires 8.8 for even things like seatbelt mounts. I guess this is a minimum requirement though.

8.8 is industry standard...

In terms of roll cages, its also the bolt Safety Devices supply.

Somewhere around Swindon

but what about shear strength? i was under the impression high tensile had less shear strength ?

8.8 will bend a bit,14.9 are strong but tend to snap under a sideways load

so in that respect am i better off sticking with 8.8s for the suspension bits as well? bearing in mind that all of the bolts in question are horizonatl and thus under a shear load?
