Hi,
I've just finished my project which is the same stated above: an internal boot release (ideal for smoothed bootlid conversion).
just wondered if you could post a few thoughts of what you see, i've given a brief description of the stages as well.
The aim of the project was for inovation, aiding commercial potential.
Any ideas and thoughts are most welcome!!
thanks mark.

(where you see the screws, i mounted a steel sheet the same size and shape underneath the fibreglass, so i could tap it with more durability allowing fitment of the screws. *note obviously didn't do it very well first time on the RHS! Next job is to neaten it all up!).

Comments-

1) How would you mount this on a standard steel bootlid? The screws would poke through to the outside of the panel and look awful.

2) The link from your crank arm to the pull cable end is a split pin, they are not designed to be used in this way, a clevis pin secured with a split pin would be a better solution.

3) How would it work in operation? You would pull the cable from inside thcar to release the catch. Then you would let go of the cable to go and open the boot. By the time you got there, the return spring would have re-secured the latch. So would need 2 people to get into the boot!! Plus the fact if you did get it open, how would you shut it? The latch would be in the closed position stopping the boot shutting.

You wanted thoughts, heres a few to think about!

I've made a steel catching plate which mounts onto the cross member to stop the wire "pinging back" so it holds it there until it needs to locked.

closeing the boot will require the actuating elver to be pulled, boot held shut and lever released..

a beter solution (and one iv seen workign and was amased at how simple it was) is a sprign loaded latch, like your average yale house lock. except the latchy bit can be pulled back by a wire. so pull wire to pop boot. and jsut shut boot to lock it. i'll see if i can find apic of what i meen.. will wb soon.

Edit sorry should have read your posts.. but knowing now "tough" the mini boot can be to lock the sprign my not be enough and an overcomplicated system may fail.

edit somat liek this : -

another thing id be thinking about is a back up system should what ever system use fail. as the mini boots sealed youd be shagged!

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

The Rover 200/400 from 1989 to about 1995 had a cable boot release. When the lever was pulled the boot unlocked and it popped open slightly so that it didn't relock when the lever was released. I don't know how it popped the boot open, but it might be worth having a look at one in a scrap yard to possibly help out with your project.
