I know a few of you are quite into this, so someone may be able to give me an idea.

I am looking at buying this bike on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mountain-Bike-MTB-Ha...1QQcmdZViewItem

What is a fair price I should look to pay for it?

I am after this as my Dad has an older Haro mountain bike and it is an excellent bit of kit (well, in my limited opinion it is anyway!)

It all depends what you want it for. I wouldnt buy it because it wouldnt last five minutes the way I ride em.

Not been looking at the bike stuff for a long time but IMHO I wouldnt pay any more that 150 for it, its only a friction damper in there, if its an oil damper then a little more and if it were an air shock then a bit more again, the forks would usualy be of a similar standard. The STX gears are reasonably good but only 21 gears. more modern gear systems have 24 and 27. The tektro brakes are a bit middle of the road, they work but how are you going to use the bike?

Like I say IMHO 150 tops

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I personally would not pay much for that. If you have to replace the chain that means replace almost the entire gearsystem as its worn together, if not the chain will slip. also the gearsystem suggests to me that the bike is not a high end product to begin with... I would steer clear, but thats me. I have worked in Norways biggest bicycleshop for a while and where also competing MTB for a few years BTW.

£800 new? I dont think so to be honest.

I paid £500 6 years ago for a bike with a specification that blows that out of the water....

I personally wouldnt pay much more than £50 quid - I really dont think its worth alot.

(I worked in a bike shop too, will hopefully work there this summer when home from uni again)

It's certainly not worth a great deal & personally i'd avoid it as cheap/cheapish full sus bikes are shite.
I'd look for a decent hardtail with a sensible spec as you'll get a lot more bike for your money.

I only really want it as a bike for riding to work and back and maybe the pub up the road, nothing more than that! If I want excitement I go and do a trackday!

The only reason I considered that one is that it has an alloy frame so should be reasonably light, at the moment I have an old shitty Apollo piece of crap, so something at least half decent would be a major upgrade for me!

I was personally thinking about £75 tops, unless anyone can point me at anything better for that kind of money??

I can't see the bike (can't view ebay in work) but if you want a bike just for nobbing around town, steer clear of rear suspension, have front if you must.

Rear suspension bikes are really for big downhill off-road riding. All they do when you use them round town is absorb your pedal energy as they compress and unload with every stroke.

They do look spangley though, which is why there are loads of cheap ones about which are no good for anything.

Compared to your Apollo, (remember those gav!!! they were made from scaffold poles and impossible to build up!), riding one of the hardtail motorworld bikes will be bliss.

Yeah hard to forget them lol, they are getting much better now though...well a little maybe*wink*
