I got a rebult kit (cheers Iain) and have two Turbos, one i bought of e-bay descibed as a good used one, actually loads of play in shaft.

The other came with the car that i'm rebuilding and hasn't been used for about 4 years and doen't turn freely, in fact it hardly turns at all.

The question is which is best to rebuild or should i strip them both down and see what i find?

Thanks in advance.

westbury, wiltshire

i would say the one that doesnt move much would be the best bet, soak the bearing housing internally for a bit with meths or some thing like that and get it turning to se what the play is in that one first

Difficult one to call. With the one with play in it, make sure 100% the blades haven't been touching the casing.

With the other one, put it in a bucket of diesel for a few days, then see what it is like.

Dismantal one turbo at a time, , soka the bearing housing in a seal bucket filled with petrol. On the compressor side, check the carbon seal, make sure you remove it, cause it doesn't like petrol. If your turbo doesn't have a carbon seal on the compressor side, then you must have a piston seals on it, carfully inspected the circumfrence of the piston ring groove, and see if any small cracks appears..., do the same for the turbine shaft, there must be a piston seal, or air seal.

Inspect the compressor/turbine housing (SNAIL), for indication of rubbing, if see, the bearing is probably no good, .... then inspect the turbine shaft, by using a dental pick, lightly feel the shaft to see if there is any steps on it. If there, then get the turbo rebuild by a profession where they will put new parts and rebalance the whole thing.

Id sort out the worse one first, as youll end up with one good one and one with play, rather than one good one and one thats still unusable (not that im saying you should use a turbo with play in the shaft, but if it works, it works..)
