what is that bit on the back of the pulley the peice of metal with two notches out of it, does it have a use or is it like a wasp and only there cause it can be

I believe it is there to work with some kind of sensor the BL dealers would have had that fitted in the bracket that is on some of the timing covers.

It is useless to us and can easily be removed by drilling the heads off the 3 rivets that can be seen on the crankshaft side of the pulley.

i wouldnt remove it, its also good at keeping road dirt away from the crank oil seal!!!!!
