Just picked up a very cheap 4 sync SC gearset and after counting the cogs, realise it's a metro challenge set. Looking at running a 3.44 FD 19.5" tyres (10" wheels) with a decent pokey supercharged engine, is this a bad idea. Do any of you run challenge sets or dogboxes on the road, I want a tall first but this is excessive.

Cheers, Stu

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

Stu, I've always had the standard 2.54 first with a 3.44 FD. This gives an OR of 8.74.
I've always thought that my mini could drag a taller 1st gear, so I'm swapping out to a 3.1 for 2006. This'll give an OR of 7.87

If you take the 2.31 of the challenge transmission, with a 3.44 then this is 7.95.

I'd say that if you are willing to slip the clutch a little (ie you have an organic plate) you'll be very happy with the 1st gear ratio.

Sold the fucking thing, I was mucking about with a load of graphs on excel and then realised that a challenge box was a good idea.

For the record, the mini has been on and off the road for a while, I've just had the slotted nut on the CV eat itself into "that washer" which signifies a shagged wheel bearing, got about 5mm play in any direction with that wheel. Got myself an alloy flywheel and ALLOY backplate to play with, the idea being to make the engine triply responsive. Since my blower head burned in the shed fire (warped) I've decided to run a higher CR head 8.3 and blow through twin 1.5's the idea being to get the mixture right and run more advance. Waiting to get the shed rebuilt (big shed!) so I can rebuild my bits. The car is seriously fun with a cammed up 1380 in it, doesn't have the long legs of the blower engine though. The minispares RC40 link pipe looks like it has been bent by a gorilla. Shocking poo quality.

back in a few months!

As Dave said, stop pissing about on the computer and DO SOMETHING. Advice taken *wink*

Stu, I am sure you probably know this but check the inside edge of the drive flange for wear or damage, I once had wheel bearing problems for months, kept changing bearings and retorquing until it occured to me to inspect the part of the drive flange that clamps up to the "outer side" of the inner race. Sure enough this was damaged and must have been distorting. A new drive flange cured the problem.
