I'm still on the std verto one ATM... but thinking of changing, I doubt slicks and a std clutch are going to work well LOL.

So what do you use?

Dave, what is the original height of the backplate lugs? Do you increase the pressure of grey diapr.??

Shortening the lugs solved the problem? I had the same problem in a quarter mile run last year; but only when I was using 1,2bar (18psi), and only in 4th gear at 4000rpm for a very short time. (maybe for 2 seconds). Have you ever tried a douple grey dia??

Harry,
Std backplate lugs are 1" (25.4mm).
I did some tests with some fancy machines we have at work and realised that full clamping force is not being attained with a grey, becuase the actual 'body' of the diaphram (cover) is deforming because of the stronger spring used on the grey. (the same basic cover 'body' is used on all covers, except for a few tackwelded pieces of metal). This still happens on the orange of course, but to a much lesser degree.
My test showed that peak clamping force, with a brand new friction plate, with a grey diaphram, was achieved at 23.5mm.
Put it this way - my clutch slipped after only a few thousand miles before (it wasn't even worn down to the 'embossing' in the friction material. After the change, and two further rolling road tunes, it still holds just fine...

not sure if you have seen my post just below this one also about clutch but you will see i have a comp AP plate with orange cover and it does not bite very hard and i can slip it and the pedal is hard but very acceptable.
soi guess the grey wouldonly be a little bit heavier

I find a grey is fine, although my mrs did complain it was a bit heavy, but she still wanted to drive it all the time

sure a grey diph isn't the best in town jungle , but you can use neutral instead of staying with your foot on the clutch pedal *laughing*

welo the trouble with glasgow centre is thers alot of lights on steep hills, so slipping of the clutch is a necesity, besides every time i change to neutral the lights go to green, so its not an option *happy*

I mounted the Metro clutch master cylinder with a -4 SSbraided pipe frome the master to the slave with a grey dia. - and the pedal effort is much less then with the original Mini setup on my other car with the orange diaphragma! Try it! you will be surprised!

I fiitted a selfmade "bigger bore" -4 SS braided pipe from the master directlly to the slave cylinder. I opened up the outlet/inlet bore of the master and Minislavecylinder to 5mm. Maybe there is a reduction in friction of the moving transfer fluid?!; I never measured the bore of the Metro master! Is it smaller? - maybe the reason?! (Bought the parts from Think Automotive)

well the bore of the pipe wont affect the static pressure (when ur sittin with ur foot onthe clutch) mety m-cylinder must b smaller i guess :S
