can you run a seprate oil system from turbo to oil cooler, and back to oil tank, not going into engine at all.

I don't see why not. As long as you feed the turbo with enough oil at the right pressure it won't care where the oil has come from.

The small(er) capacity of a sepperate system might mean you'd need to change its oil more often, and it'd be extra weight and energy consumption. Not sure I'd bother, but you might have a good reason to be thinking about it (Turbo under the boot floor for example).
