Um...I still have no reply from Alex....is he over in Germany??

My spi mini died on me the week before last suddenly in the rain. According to my mechanic it was a faulty ecu, which I am very sceptical about.

I cleaned out all the ecu connectors and realy connectors using contact cleaner. It seems to be .... Ok.

Though, I have not driven it on the street yet, I have only driven it in my multi-storey car park for about 40 minutes and three or four cold starts.

The reason for considering Megasquirt is the replacement of the rover ecu (purely a psycholoogical thing) and also an excuse to get a little bit more out of the 1275 block.

Alex,

Thanks for your reply.

The thing is I have lost my faith with my original ECU, so I am looking for alternatives, I did think in having it "carbed" but after reading through this sites and also yours, it makes me think twice and see the plus side in using a mappable ecu.

Understanding that you are doing some work on a Spi Mini Monte, that's why I want check out a few things from you in putting one in my car.

1. Is it a direct replacement, plug and play job in putting in a megasquirt unit?

2. Do you have a ready built kit, do you supply the wiring loom (as I'd like to route the MS unit inside the car) and can you provide the basic mapping required for me start with?

3. Does the original Rover Air Con unit be a problem? Though I believe it is not connected to the existing ECU.

Cheers
Kasim

Hi Kasim,

The Monte project is still just that - a project.

I intend to offer a direct replacement for the SPi but as yet I do not have a fully designed plug and play kit.

So in answer:

1). I hope to offer a plug and play kit but do not yet.

2) I can supply you a ready built MS ecu but as yet I haven't found anyone to supply the plug to fit the std loom - so no wiring looms as yet.

3) Air Con was not offered as an option in this country and unfortunately I no experience of it. I would imagine its a stand alone system, but it could be linked to the standard ECU.

Thanks for the advice.

As I am a newbie on this, what sort of mods will I be looking at, if I were to put in a Megasquirt.

Cheers
Kasim

Kasim,

The most important thing in such a project is planning.

Since this is already an injected engine, what is probably going to be the biggest job is wiring. You need to become very familiar with your car's wiring and compare the car wiring diagram with the MS wiring diagram. You have to check if all the current ECU functions can be taken over by the MS. If not, you have to decide what to do about it: lose functionality or find another way of controlling this function.

You need to decide if you're going to slice into the current harness, make an adapter for the MS to plug into the stock harness, or make your own new harness.

The neatest solution would be to have an adapter for the stock harness to be able to swap back and forth between the stock ECU and MS but that would require getting an ECU connector and making the adapter. You could get the connector from a dead ECU and design a small board to mate this connector to the DB37 connector required by MS and route all the signals to the corresponding pins. That could be a little more involved than what you were planning on doing.

The most practical solution would be to splice the MS connector into the stock harness. You have to plan how (connectors, soldering, ...) and where in the harness you're going to do this. This will have a big impact on the ease with which you'll be able to troubleshoot any problem that comes up (and there will be some) and how easy it will be to maintain after you get it runnning.

The last solution is to make your own harness. This can give a very neat solution but this is a big job and, again, it requires very careful planning.

You will also need to calibrate the sensors so that MS can read them correctly. And you will need to tune it. That in itself can be another big project.

So this is far from a plug and play job but it can be done. And once it's done you'll have a very flexible system that you'll understand quite well. allowing you to adapt much more easily future engine modifications and upgrades.
