At the weekend we got opulled up by the scrutineers for having the exhaust in the boot where the fueltank is, he said it was a fire risk especially during a rear-end smash. We argued that fuel would not ignite on the exhaust, but he was having none of it.

I've looked in the Blue Book and there is nothing to say we can't do what we ahve done, and if you think about it most cars have the exhaust running right under the fuel tank. This is no safer in an accident by his reckoning. Also, the TT ran like this for years with no problem

I'm going to phone the scrutineer up tonight to argue the toss, but I could do with some evidence/knowledge.

So, anyone know about fuel and ignition properties specifically regarding exhaust temps. Links to articles would be really helpful.

Cheers

Wil

did they say anything about dumping fuel on the right handers dude? quite a bit came flying out as you went round.

saw the marshalls run out onto the track with the brushes and fire extinguishers after your last 2 runs...hehe.

yup saw you on 3 wheels every time through the chicane, and i think it was your last run anton was trying to get a photo of it when you went up onto 2 wheels...lol.
Looked like you had a fair bit of oversteer coming out of the first 2 turns aswell.

Was a cool day out, just forgot the sun tan lotion so i'm a bit lobstered now...lol

As for the fuel/exhaust thing i know from experience that fuel wont ignite on a hot turbo thankfully, but oil does! Don't know of any articles to support it though unfortunately

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

i'd be suprised if the rear section of the exhaust rises above the auto ignition temperature

On my old clubman i had a fuel leak in the engine bay, loads of fuel pissing all over the exhaust manifold - and it didnt set on fire. - wasn't a turbo though..

Rather than argue the toss with a scrutineer (pointless exercise usually, I have tried it before, and they are normally the most pigheaded human beings in existance) could you not just make up a lightweight ally guard to box in the section of exhaust that is in the boot area?

Tom, this is obviously what we will do if it comes to the crunch, but it is work we don't have toime to do at the moment. And you are right scrutineers are pig headed, hed did not like my comment that I have put out BBQ's with petrol.

I know what you're saying Tom. And I have a feeling it will come to this, but it's a pain in the arse and I'm fucked off with the whole thing at the moment and still want to prove a point.

I know what you are saying guys and good luck with your debating.

But arguing with scrutineers is a bit like arguing with traffic policemen, no matter how good your argument, proof, or point of view, they don't like being told they are wrong and when challenged just become more and more of an arsehole!

I bet the "petrol BBQ extinguisher" went down like a cup of cold sick but I would have loved to have seen his face LOL!!!!

i agree about the back box not reaching petrols flash point temperature, but the manifold definately could.

HAHAHAHA thats a great mental image

Its all a laod of toss though, even if u do cover it, in a smash theres no garantee the cover wont come off or split etc...

Give him both barrels, everyone knows its not going to ignite.

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

i agree with tom, dont know much about scrutineers but if you make an enermy of one he may well just be a pratt every time he checks your car.

a point you could use in your argument wil is the fact that alot of new cars have PLASTIC petrol tanks in them with the exhaust running just below them with nothing but a alumininum heatshield inbetween.*oh well*

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.
