I've heard a lot of people talking about blocking the oil filter bypass in the filter housing.

How is it done? anyone got a picture of on that's been done?

Well, you remove the steel bypass unit, and stick a solid plug in it's place...

Word of advice - the die-cast filter head is not the easiest to Tig - unless you're an experienced welder.

In that respect, I'd tap it out and wind a plug in there with a little sealant.

i tried this earlier last month without sucsess, the casting is very thin around the bypass unit and doesnt take much of a tap, certainly 3/8" bspt wont fit (though that is a bit ambitious).

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

Well, I guess you could 'turn' a plug on a lathe that is a super-snug fit to the extent that you need to tap (not force) it in with a small hammer.
A small shot with even a badly-wielded Tig would hold it in 100% for sure.

I haven't done this yet. But the method I had in mind was to leave the standard insert in place, and drill through the casting behind it, to allow you to wind a small set screw (maybe 1/4") down onto the back of the ball bearing that lifts off its seat to bypass oil, so that it could not lift off its seat, hence no bypass.

The ball and spring is contained in this 'formed' steel assembly Tom - basically, if you remove the tangs, the ball, spring and cage come out as one.
It surprised me that it was that way.
Basically - I think you'll struggle with it.

That aftermarket one someone posted here not too long ago for £60 or somet looks all the better IMO.
Especially if tthe top is thick enough to put a 1/8 NPT / BSPt tap straight into for the turbo oil feed!

Anyway, good lateral thinking tom.

what about just a blob of mig weld on the bearing/cage to stop it opening? just as a quick fix...
not sure if the the weld would penetrate the bearing though...?

Had a look today.
Make a snug fitting steel plug, put the alloy housing in the oven then it shrinks onto the plug, couple of taps with a centre punch on the alloy like it was before to make sure it won't come out

Plan B

m8 csk bolt fits a treat,(bit like a valve in the head)
Rip the ball thing out complete, drill and tap the top of the casing and fit a lock nut too with a bit of thread sealer.
