A intercooler is air/air and a Chargecooler is water/air :)

The only problem with the chargcooler as I see it is the weight penalty. Probably not to much of a worry on a road car though.

thanks a lot guys
something to think about
but pete (mini1071s)how can you get a chargecooler under the rear subby with out the plumbing to it running alongside the exhaust?

TBH i was thinking of putting it under the rear seat with a small scoop in front of it to stop it cluttering the engine bay but i cant see a way past the plumbing-next-to-exhaust issue

Lotus used chargecoolers on the esprits, so if all else fails, esp the late s4 esprits used 2 small chargecoolers on the twin turbo v8s.

Here , here to Pete. Just to add what i have heard, and that is that intercoolers come into there own from 100 mph+ where the air going over them is huge.

Best 1/4 mile 13.2 seconds @116 mph

just a thought.

if you use a charge cooler then i assume you will use a seperate water system thus having its own radiator. this radiator has to try and cool the water to near outside air temp. then the charge cooler uses this to try and cool the charge to the water temp or as near as possible.

the intercooler may be less efficient at heat transfer but the overall package of the chargecooler is less efficient than first thought. in my opinion the intercooler works well when driving around and the chargecooler would work well (with ice/chilled water) when drag racing.

also all this depends on the size (and weight) of the proposed intercooler or chargecooler. i would think the main advantage of the chargecooler is its small size, thus allowing the instalation of a relatively large capacity cooler. were its hard to locate a large intercooler.

just my opinion though.
