Hi guys, my mates got a 1980's 1.9 water cooled VW campervan and yesterday he was driving it and suddenly couldnt get it into any gears.

Basically, when the engine is off you can select all gears, but once started it wont go into any of them.

What do you guys think? is the box shafted? or clutch?

Hes not too mechanically minded, and to make matters even better in a week were driving it 4000 miles round europe!

Any help will, as always, be very much appreciated.

Jo

just a sugestion,
with the engine off, put it in gear and try and push it, ypu probably wont move it, then try with the clutch pressed, if you still cant move it (becouse its in gear and not just cos its too heavy, lol) then you know its the clutch, so can investigate further. i have no idea about campers tho so cant help much more than that, could just be a cable? also check if when the clutch is pressed that (i am guessing there will be an arm) the arm moves, if it does then its not the cable...and so on...

sorry if i am going on i cant sleep and its 4 am and i have work tomorrow :'( :'(

i thought t25 had hydrolics to actuate the clutch, might need a new slave cylinder or bleeding

yes aircooled are cable but this is a water cooled van and iirc they are t25 or chisel which is hydrolic

That should be a Hydraulic clutch. lay underneath and have your friend step on the clutch. The slave is on the LH side of the tranny. It should move a plunger (not alot) but still move it that pushes against the clutch release arm in the tranny. It sounds like either the clutch master, slave or the high pressure line that has failed. Look under the dash to see if the master is dripping. Look at the slave to see if it is wet. Chances are one of these is at fault
