leeds/wakefield.

well yes and no,

you know the story so far,

i had come to the conclusion my rear engine is not making the power it should be or can do, due to the nitrous bring fed into the airbox, resulting in soft initial hit and and to my mind not making the top end power ,

SO, i set up the injecters above the inlet trumpet within the airbox to try to get a more dense charge in sooner, for the big launches i need .

my first run wet a plug on the line so was aborted,
the second run seemed to go well even with a poor 60 ft of 2.09sec, but fairlty strong over the line at 123mph,

at this point i may as well share with you the point of the oputing ,and was to systamatically test different settings ,[tyre pressures, damper settings , shift times .] also to see if the air collector worked at all on the front engine,,i had also soaked the tyres on softener all week.

so for run 3 set pressures to 7lb front and 9 lbs rear.
set all dampers to full soft , and made a conscious effort to try warm up all four tyres,
with the same nitrous setting as previous i let rip and immediatly felt the front come up and lots of traction through the rear wheels, and away i went ,although the launch was a goodun the overall run felt lacklustre with a poor terminal linguising over the line at 119 but in 11.26 secs,
on inspection i was out of nitrous so this explains the poor terminal.
so now i had grip,
on with new big boosted bottles , and reset tyres ,but left dampers as was , full soft. and put a more aggresive setup into the rear nitrous
i warmed up the front in a blast of revs , then tried the rears, which initially broke loose then all hell broke loose with the most violent vibration i have had in this car , i had a feeling of cogs stripping it was so bad,
the last time i encounterend anything similar was when a pad off the clutch plate came off at high rpm causing massive imballance and vibration.
but once i eased off all went quiet.i prayed it was tyre shake so moved forward in to stage ,

i gunned it off the line and instantly the worlds worst vibration was back, TERRIFYING BAD. i aborted. and in the few mins that followed going through all the possible senarios concluded it had to be clutch.

a few simple test up the top of the pits convinced me the rear cluch has cried enough.
im not supprised as they have both been in over 2 years now and were being changed in time for the big one at Avon,

so tonight i pulled the flywheel to find everything in tact but very worn,
i also pulled the diff out to have a look in the box, and all looks well, there was almost no filling on the sump plug so theres nothing broken in there and the pinnion is as new, the drops feel fine .

so my faint suspisions about the rear clutch being on its way out were confirmed the instant i got proper traction,
its only taken two years for me to admit to myself and one or two others i need to try make the rear engine do most of the launching, but was always afraid to load it up too much,
it now appears i must take the risk.

roll on july,lol.
just in case i got it wrong about the clutch , i'm happy to hear other views, JB weld and polishing compound are allowed .
carl,

leeds/wakefield.

i just got in from the workshop,
have face up the flywheel ans backplate , the flywheel only needed a few thou, but the b/plate needed abou 15thou so has distorted a bit ,this could have been the vibration as the plate spins up passing the distorted backplate causing grip then no grip 150 times a second,
also i checked the tell tale on the rear engine ,
the front showed 9000, and the rear showed,9500 up against the stop on the end of the scale, lol,

but the oil pressure is fine when i ran it tonight to warm the oil prior to dropping , and started just as normal.
maybe valve bounce , but felt more of a vibration than the valves.

Carl have you considered fitting a passenger seat and charging for a shot up the strip....I think you would pay for the other twin cam in one weekend....I'd pay for a ride in that.

I also think you should have a crack at the old 0 - 100 - 0, see if you can beat the ultima's world record.
