After reading another thread (about intercoolers strangle) that mentioned alternator loading, I was just wondering:

I have to say I don't think it will make much difference. As we have measured our car only takes 4A when running that is about 48watts which is about 0.06bhp (I think so anyway) The gain is if you remove the alternator as it weighs a tonne... http://www.twin-turbo.co.uk

When talking to Andy from MLM (i think it was andy anyway, might have been mr dodd) talk moved onto putting a switch on the throttle pedal which cuts the small wire which goes to the alternator when full throttle is applied. The wire is usually connected to the back of the instrument pack, but in this case a switch would cut it when the pedal is flored. If this is done, it'll stop the alternator charging the system so it doesnt take any load up when u need it.
I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

It make no difference to my car as I've tested it on the rolling road, so my advice is to not bother, but I'm sure others with not agree. If i remember correctly mate you lost a couple of hp and ray said it may be due to a slightly weaker spark with no alternator charging the system!! -MINI CLUBMAN 1380 TURBO- |

there is a company up this way (scotalnd) that dies a device to cut the alternator at full throttle, it also has the ability to detect if the battery is getting drained to much so it doesnt disconnect the alternator atall. so you never flatten your battery. works well on modern cars wiht lots of electical goodies, especialy at night. know atleast one person has tested it on teh rollers back to back, got 2-3hp.

The amount of bhp the alt zaps depends on how many amps it's pulling.

An alternator weighs 4KG iirc but then again it is hanging over the front wheels to aid traction.
