Just wondering if i can remove the rear bulkhead (between the boot and rear seats).
I'm not planning to have rear seats and if i did remove it i would weld in brace bars.

Can this be done? Has anyone done it?

cheers

no...

not without a totally welded in cage... think more space frame than roll cage!

I would have through it would have been ok, to cut out. If you look, it's not touching the rear wings, only the parcel shelf, I know jon flanigan has cut his out and replaced it with a sheet of ally

I was advised against it by Keith Calver, as well as TVR Dave (some of you might know as a very sucessful hill climber).

Although its not touching the rear wings.. it does join the rear arches, the toe board and the parcel shelf. So without a serious cage (aka Jimster's) I think you'll be in trouble!

don't bother is my advice, have done it myself, saves little weight in the long run and it raises the MOT man's eyebrow..

Bit tricky removing that, remember iain telling me about someone he knew had a bodyshop specialist remove the rear bulkhead and the shell twisted writing the whole car off!!

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Yep, they put a brace bar across like a strut brace and they managed to twist the shell.

should i just get a new shell then :(

the shell seems straight, but then again looking at it from certain angles it seems twisted a bit :(

would a fully welded in cage help?

If you were to cross brace it and reinforce the mounting points u should be able to recreate the stregnth of the origional metal sheet. IMHO :)

Welding in a brace bar wont have any effect on twisting moments on the chassis.. and would be next to useles.

Edited due to my spelling.

If its gone scew already then no a cage will only make sure it never moves from out of alignment...

Get the tape measure out and do some diagonals on fixed points... like door appertures corner to corner and then compair the numbers for each side. Other good places might be from the lip of the rear window across to the other side, front and rear...

almost anywhere where u can get two readings to compair!

My friend paul has removed it all completeley, even the rear parcel shelf in his mary quant and put harnesses in and a spare tyre holder opposite the fuel tank. To be honest, seeing the fuel tank and battery whilst driving along with no cage scares me. What scares me more is that the subframes are solid mounted!
