dug me spare gearbox out and inside looks the same but ive noticed a couple of slight differences.

No1= theres studs rather than bolts on the diff housing and transfere casing
No2= the casting around the idler bearing a bit different i think.

so i think that everything will still fit ok.

but will somebody that knows just clarify that it will or wont be ok.

cheers guys*smiley*

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

Earlier boxes had studs AND USED GASKETS

Later boxes used bolts AND NO GASKETS

Other than that they are all much of a muchness, as for the idler area, just check to make sure its an A+ box with the larger diameter idler bearing and not an A series which uses smaller idler bearings.

Do you mean gaskets or locktabs? I'm a bit confused as I've always used gaskets on everything

Ther is a generation of A+ box that has 4 bolts rather than 3 on the main bearing retainer (by the pinion). These tend to crack, I know I had one.

Tom means between the diff housing and maincase.

As a general rule - if there are studs, you need gaskets - if bolts, you need RTV.

However - in the 'changeover years' I believe there was an overlap period, so if you're unsure, then bolt it up and measure it to see if the area where the bearings sit is round or not.

Yes sorry, wasn't very clear there. Also the transfer gear case to the end of the block/box always uses a gasket AFAIK.

Vizard advises against using a box with the 4 bolt retainer, and i was also told not to use one by Phil Hepworth {Gp A Turbo daddy}. I had one which i discarded on this advise and used a 3 bolt one.

Apparently I have a high powered vehicle!! :)
Today when I was going to rebuild the box on BIR1 after a 3rd gear cone coating failure I saw that the casing was cracked.
Blimey, I don't have some half torque do I??

I guess it was bodged previously *wink*
