Yo,
Just went and fetched the mini from my mums place, and thought the clutch was slipping. disapointed i drove it slowly to teh petrol station to put some air in the tyres.. on the way out of the petrol station, the clutch sliped in 2nd. I noticed that the pedal didnt come back up all the way, and when i used my foot to pull it up, the clutch stopped slipping, and the car went like a rocket.

So, my question is: What would cause the clutch to not come up all the way, and what can I do to fix it?

Cheers lads - Avon awaits and I dont want to miss it!

-al.

Try lubricating the pedal! WD40 and work it back and forward a bit!

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

As tom says, but try lubricating on the clutch boss, "big nut" where it pivots in and out alex

usually it siezes there, pump and lube there

if no joy and you find it totally free! buy checking with a lever manually and alls ok

it goes in and out smothley

the master cylindars JOSSED! especially if its an old one *wink*

minispares around 40 billys

it could also be the clutch slave as well

but i would go for the master *wink*

The thing that points to it for me is that he had to pull the pedal back with his foot, the pedal box does have a return spring and so the pedal should return on its own.

However the points as mentioned above are also worth checking out.

I think I have a spare good clutch master cyl if you need one.

I wonder if it's worth checking the flexible hydraulic hose from the master to the slave. They tend to collapse in on themselves when they get old. Everything looks fine from the outside, but they act as a one way valve on the inside.

Cheap replacement.

mine did exactly the same but i didnt realise for a while and it burnt out my thrusts :(

swapped it for a new pedal box and its been fine since. definately try oiling up the spring in the pedal box.

Cheers guys - will have a look tonight.

Andy - the hoses and what-not are all less than a year old. I had to replace them when i set fire to the engine bay. LOL

I had to strip the pedal box apart in my mini after a winter lay-up several years ago. Just like this, the pedal bush had seized.

If you remove the heater - and release the tension on the return springs - and pull the clevis pins - you can remove the pedals in situ.
Much easier than trying to remove the whole setup I assure you.

Just pull it apart, emery / steel wool the shaft and bushes, slip a smear of grease in there, and re-assemble. Should get it done inside of an hour once you've fannied about moving the heater (assuming you have one).

Only comment I have is that in my car I can't get the pedal pivot shaft out with the pedal box in situ because of the turbo bulkhead box in the way.....

See how you get on Alex, you may be able to do it in yours?

Ok guys, i've lubed everything in the enginebay up, and it still does the same, I think the spring on the pedal box might be weak, so, where can i get one, and how do i fit it? :/

I dot think the spring will be week I am sure if you remove the pedal and clean all the moving parts and grease you will find it is ok.

I was under the impression that the diaphragm did the pedal return thing???? the sprign was just a helper.

Still reco you'll find the plunger and arm worn as above. That was off a 92 Cooper so not that old. Incidently the release bearing had also seized and worn the thrust sleave and verto diaphragm fingers, the whole clutch was pretty much bolloxed.

either that or its the carpet *tongue*

No carpets in my car.

I found it really hard to get WD40 onto that joint, let alone take it apart to grease it up - For now i've just bodged it with a bungee. LOL!

It'll do until after avon (as long as my other problem isnt serious...)

Try undoing the nut at one end of the pivot shaft, it is a 1/2" AF nut. This will then allow you to slide the pivot shaft across slightly, so you can work some lubricant down the length of the shaft by working it in and out. I am confident this is your problem.

No - he means on the pedal box itself... This is whee your problem lies, NOT anything forwards of the pushrod.
