well im just finishing an apprenticeship in light vehicle maintainance and am looking at going to uni to do a motorsport engineering degree . Im also build my own race/trackday car so i wouldnt say its stunted my enthusiasm. IMO if its in your blood then you'll be happy doing it for as long as you do it....job or hobby. |

Get a trade under your belt (as they say), do the apprenticeship and if after that you want to do something else, so be it.
I seriously doubt it! |

Goto college the student life is not as Ibiza as uni life but just as fun plus on the side you come out with a qualification in an industry that will earn you bucks!

It depends what your qualifications lead to, I went to uni for 8 years and so far it has got me no where. Finally after months of unemployment I have a job offer but it's with a company with a bad reputation. Not complaining as I'm glad to have something with the way things are at the moment but I know a lot of people that went into tertiary education and got nothing out of it. On 7th Nov, 2008 Nic said:

deffo I always thought it would be quite fun playing with false teeth Plus if you get a motorsport qualification it doesnt mean you will find a job in it Hit the nail on the head there! ^^^^ I studied motorsport, tried to get a job at the end of it with no luck. I was to "inexperienced", I then went on to do an appreticeship in engineering and by that time is was "too old" (22) to start working in motorsport. From what I gather they want someone that is 16 with good grades that they can mould into what they want. My 2 years doing a hnd appear to have been wasted also for being too old and not having any experience in what I studied. If only I knew all of this years ago, I would have done A levels that related to each other and done something interesting at uni to get me started on a graduate scheme Oh well, lets hope there is an after life to try again in........ |

The best place to be in the current climate is in college or uni! Get a grant and get your qualification in what ever as the world around you sorts itself out then come out at the end as things are getting back to some form of normality Own the day

Just make sure you pick the right degree. I didn't. dropped out of uni after 2 years and started at the bottom of the dogs body ladder. I have a good 10 years work behind me now and have had a descent career to date, but it's taken a lot of hard work to get there.

IM pretty much in the same boat kid, if i could drop I.T i would without a doubt, but the mortgage says otherwise, Id love to go into minis full time, running a mailorder buisness or something like that but that can wait! Appreticeships are the way foward imo! You have your foot in the door and if the employer thinks anything of you they should set you on!

That said, my little brother did his ellectronics degree and then spent 2 years looking for a job. The job he got though, was with the company that makes the chips that are in eveything and he is currently on his third visit to the US this year having been in china last week.... EDIT: It's fair to say that I am board shitless in my carrer and wouldn't be bothered if I never went back again, but I'be saddled myself with a mortgage and an expensive hobby so I'm stuck with it :- On 21st Aug, 2009 Mr Joshua said: The best place to be in the current climate is in college or uni!
