Took the camera in the garage so heres some pictures......

Got the bearings on Friday but I wasn't happy with the big ends that I was sent so just got the mains built up for now. Washers are only for dry build. (However question coming, should there be anything underneath the bolt heads when torqued up proper? I can't remember...)

As you can see it is an early A+ block that does not have the cast in 'numbers' as discussed in Daves thread. It does however have the much maligned liners as shown in another thread.

These have held up my engine build for nearly 12 months while I saved up to buy them. Forged Omegas 15cc +20.

A big bunch of bananas will do for me.......

*wink*

To be honest we will see, I am going to see what it will produce at a sensible boost level and then go from there. I would rather limit it to say 10psi and have it last a bit longer. But having said that once its built there is always the temptation to squeeze a bit more out.

Mark- Cheers, thought it was nothing under the heads but couldn't remember.

i have never heard someting so funny in all my life .......................limit it to 10 psi , your having a laugh , you know the unwritten rule ,

once built , do a few miles say 50 to make sure nothing drops off / snaps etc , find a bit of open road say a mile long , go up it at say 10 psi if all is ok turn round and open the bleed valve and nail the fucker !!

Everyone knows that instructions only have to be read if the thing doesn't work....

OK OK maybe 12 psi...........

We'll see, I'm saying no more than that. I don't expect to be challenging the top banana boys put it that way!

Who put the steel main caps on for you and what was the cost involved as i'd like to go this route myself ?
And it looks the dogs. :)

Doodmeister-

It was done by MED in Leicester. The reason I went down that route was that I originally had fitted a centre main strap to the block in question by machining the standard cap down etc. When I then tried to build the engine up for the first time, I found that the centre main had gone tight and the crank would not turn if the centre main was torqued up correctly. After much checking of thrusts and bearings and arsing about the culprit was found to be the centre main must have "sprung" as it was machined and was no longer round.

Hence I needed the main bearing housings "line bored" to correct the sizes. This is a fairly expensive operation on its own and so I decided that if I was forking out for line boring I may as well have the steel caps done as well.

I think the cost was approx ?450 (can't remember exactly now) but that was including having the top of the block modified for group A head gasket as well.

We'll see...........

I am sure it would be up to high boost levels, just depends how much I choose to put through it!

As I have said before, I want it to last reasonably well.

Budget not that big, hence progress has been so slow. Also hard to get motivated to get on with it when money is the constraint against how you want to build it all the time.

17psi! Woo hoo! I am going to have to get a ride of one of you lot before too long, hoping to make it to Avon Park this year.

PS Jim- at least its the RIGHT colour.....*wink*

What??

This is the right colour:

No Boyracer engine paint here *tongue*

On my next engine I'll be using a 4 bolt main cap as well. Good idea that...
