As i have said before I am looking at some new tools, so I have been on the look out for a snap on van to see what deals they had. Anyway I found one but the bloke did not what to really chat to me when I said am not in the trade. He said he could not really do much for me!

Are they all jumped up F==king D==k heads? as its put me right off getting anything from him. Looks like I will keep looking on ebay.

I was saying that I was a cash buyer, also what I did for work. He did say if I was to buy stuff off ebay and it was to go man down he could not swap it *Confused*

We have a snap on van come round at work. He's a really helpful bloke, never had any problems swapping stuff, he lets you trade in old snap on stuff for new. Few guys at work have had good deals on roll cabs etc.. He let me pay by card first time round, then I set up an account through work so I don't pay tax on them. :)

It sounds like he's a bac tbh, maybe try and find someone "in the trade" that knows of a good snap on rep?

A friend of mine used to be a dealer and unless it's changed, snap-on dealers have a franchise to sell the tools, meaning they have to buy the van and all the stock out of their own pockets when they start - this can mean tens of thousands.

When they start selling, they send snap-on the cost for the tools minus a small commission and then snap-on send them a replacement for free.

Unless you have a very lucrative selling area, it is very easy to struggle to make any money, this is why the van dealers change so often

In rural areas, the dealers spend most of their time driving between garages and so have less time to sell the tools and so make less money

My understanding is snap-on now have both franchises and direct employed reps. I remember one of the local guys going nuts because he was competing with a guy who was on a salary while he was servicing a huge loan. This was a good few years ago and a few of the franchisees were leaving because of it.

Not sure if they have the same setup now though

Surely in both cases, it would be mental to turn a potential customer away ?

Find it hard to believe they said they wouldnt stand over Warranty on Snap On product though. What's that all about ? The warranty isnt with the franchisee, it's with Snap On itself.

Bound to be a dealer near you who isnt a prick and actually wants to sell stuff.

My mate doesnt rate snap, was loyal customer for years (spending nearly £50000) on tools, and when he asked to have his 1/4 drive ratchet repaired (which was 10 years old), he was told they wouldnt as it had been miss-used, erm no its just old

I really struggle with snap-on, their toolboxes are lovely, but the cost of their tools is just so much more than everyone else. It's good stuff, yeah, but not THAT good.

The snap on guy in our area is sound, but as with all snap on, it's ridiculously overpriced so I'll stick with my Halfords trade card and their tools which also carry a lifetime warranty on most stuff.

The main difference with Snap-on for me is the resale value of the tools and boxes. As good as the Halfords stuff is, it's worth buttons second hand, whereas Snapon stuff has a good residual value. I never plan to sell my tools but its nice to know that should I get bored of cars or hit financial troubles then there is some decent value in them if it came to it.

Out of interest what other tool makes are out there of a decent quality?

I have a Kamasa socket set that is 15 years old, the ratchet fooked years ago, but I've only had to replace one socket.

Other than a few Halfords prof spanners all my stuff is pretty shit. But I've had it 20 years and it all still works (Spanners do that).

But say I wanted a load of new stuff, and Snap on is too expensive and hard to get hold of, what are the options?

In my honest opinion, I haven't got much experience with many tools, I have bought some cheap extremely good spanners before and still have the ones i haven't lost, and they've taken some abuse! But get yourself a trade card and pop down Halfords, I got £20 knocked off an £80 torque wrench, and £5 knocked off a £12.50 balljoint socket the other day. It's surprising what bargain tools you can find where you least expect it, but you can't beat the feel of a good robust quality branded tool.
