hi all. got my mini over to the local rollers today for a power run.

it made 160.1 bhp, 145 pounds of torque at 13psi!

im pretty chuffed with that. its ballistic compared to my old 130 bhp 1275 turbo...

the compression ratio is 8.1:1 so it could handle much more boost in theory. but its a road car so happy with how it goes at the moment!

it pulls up well past 7k, and wants to keep going. it feels nice and quick, how quick I don't know as the speedo cable has gone!

on the way home the oil pressure tailed off a bit, down to 20psi at 2-3k revs. I pulled over, oil everywhere under the passenger side of the bonnet.

there was nothing obvious, I thought it might be the driveshaft seal gone. stripped all of the passanger running gear off, seal fine. checked everything over but nothing evident. it turns out that the oil cooler has split.

got to order a new one tonight so that I can hopefully get out and about over the bank holiday weekend.

oil pressure is good when cold - I hope I caught it in time as the last thing I want to do now is mess about pulling the engine and changing bearings

very happy this pm. got to go and put it all back together now *happy*

unless you've run it with no oil pressure you should be fine,

even 20- 30 at 2-3k isnt the end of the world, as long as it picks up a bit by 3500-4000,

160 at 13psi is a great result well done.

Just wondering why you've gone with a low CR, with low boost? I'd have thought in a road car it'd drive a hell of a lot better off boost with a higher CR?

as soon as it tailed off to 20 psi I pulled over at the nearest opportunity. hopefully all will be good with it.

where did you get it done,

even if the rollers are a bit optomistic thats still a great result.

there is pretty much no 'lag', its really nice to drive, even with the big hybrid t3. I did plan on running more boost - 16-20 psi- but the power it puts out at the moment is great, and it drives very! nicely. I don't want to make it a pig to drive.

wilfield motors in wales. tom the guy who runs it is old school and has been there for years. he was really impressed also and said he has never had a turbo mini with this sort of power

don't know - it was a mocol one so decent quality you would hope.

rough spec is

1380, 18cc accralite pistons. phase 2 cam timed at 105 degrees, standard turbo crank and rods, ultralight flywheel, second hand rebuilt turbo phil head, ported exhaust elbow and manifold, rebuilt hybrid t3 turbo, 31 actuator, 2wd cossie intercooler. sure I have missed a few bits off there but that's the basics.

cheers, dan

Shropshire.

That's a high reading for that spec at that boost in my opinion.. But as long as its quick enough for you and your happy with how it drives that's all that matters.

how was the cooler mounted to the car?

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

If the oil cooler is solid mounted then that's bad. It's supposed to be soft mounted. Like with a rubber bush or something. My mocal cooler split too on the way from the campsite to the nurburgring. I think they're shit tbh. I've since bought a setrab cooler in Germany. £100 well spent. It's very good quality and has a superior core. It's not got the folded corners like the mocal one.

Anyhow. That's a good result! Well done *happy*

cheers for the comments. yes im well chuffed as you can imagine. also need to add that steve (benross) sorted my intercooler and manifolds, plus gave some great advice on this build, so thanks steve!

not using it as a daily, have an mpi cooper for that.

I will get some pics of the graphs up. scanner is playing up at the mo so might have to be next week. it feels seriously quick - torque lines etc nice and flat, no funny dips or bumps.

the oil cooler was mounted on a bracket (solid) onto the rad, and a threaded bar up from the subframe. new oil cooler on order - might have to have a look again at how I mount it. on closer inspection it looks like it might have caught the oil filter head so might not have 'split'

once I get used to this I might look at some intercooler upgrades and maybe turning up the boost - see what it does then!

cheers, dan

wilfield motors, Abercynon, mid glam

its a lot of power for that boost I agree. my old 1275 turbo felt quick, it made 130 bhp on the same rollers. but what I have now is ballistic in comparison. my brothers 1380 with 296, webber 45, worked head etc made 115 bhp there reccently. so in comparison I think the rollers aren't too far off the mark.

on the way back before the oil problems two guys in a van wanted to know if I had a superbike engine in it after I opened it out!

the main thing is that im very happy with how it drives. il get those graphs up as soon as I can for you to have a look.

cheers, dan

My old engine made similar power at Nms with a standard ish head and a similar spec with 16psi.

It will feel like a rocket on the road!

I think there is a load of them floating about now a days, I had a long chat with a bloke at Rad Tech the other day, he said that he was getting at least 1 a month splitting and sent back to him! This is why they have started making there own.

I have just got one in the post and I am Very happy with how it looks & how its put together, he said if It splits they will stand by it!

Simon.

I have started posting on Instagram also my name on there is turbomk1golf

Nothing is impossible it just costs more and takes longer.
