I really can't see how you could convert a normal caliper to also have a mechanical handbrake, plus that would be overkill and most likely heavier which would defeat the point. you would be way better off sourcing an existing caliper.

Also the rear beam and alloy arms are irrelevant as you can have that with or without the disk setup, im only talking about the brakes.

If you were that bothered about saving weight to spend all that money on the disc conversion, then youd look at the rear beam anyway wouldnt you surely?

Because as discussed the rear brake setup isnt that much better braking wise its just for the weight.

I'm making a rear beam, and using the standard arms with protech alloy coil overs.

I just wanted to know how much weight is there to be lost over a lightweight drum setup, if it was a significant weight then it would be something to consider, but i'm not convinced.

Just checked my old notes, I was thinking 3.5kg per side, it was actually 3.5kg all up but my hubs and backplates were lightened so I saved nearly 4kg over non lightened parts

I seriously doubt it!

Ive been thinking of different ways to make my own. But I can't help thinking it'll end up not being far off the drum setup, which would defeat the object. *oh well*

thanks Paul at least i have a rough idea now, i am tempted but the price is high. I would like to see the smart version too, i don't reckon its road legal though for some reason.

Paul I'm guessing that weight saving is agaist OEM drum brake?

Does anyone know how much weight could you save out of a set of drums? Mini fins, alloy hubs, lightened shoes (it's been done) alloy slave cylinder (never seen one but I'd image it wouldn't be too hard to make) lighten hand brake arms, etc.

1012070 KAD Mini Rear disc conversion
This has been developed in 2001 to fill the need for a lightweight rear disc brake conversion with an effective mechanical handbrake to replace the standard drum brakes at the rear. The rationale was never to increase braking effort at the rear of the car but to reduce weight. Even with alloy wheel hubs and alloy wheel cylinders, drum brakes cannot be reduced below 4.6kgs on a cost effective basis due to the weight of steel in items such as the brake shoes, mechanism and backplates.

The calipers are a single piston sliding type, fully dust sealed, machined from billet aluminium. The hubs, carrying a lightweight steel drilled disc are CNC machined from billet aluminium and accept standard Mini wheel bearings. The kits are supplied complete with all of the parts to convert from drum to disc brake and use the standard handbrake cables. The kit will fit under 10" wheels and has been designed with both road and competition usage in mind.

Weight 2.8kg (the lightest drum brake assembly weighs 4.64kgs)
