I dont know
It was 580 before i rebuilt it a couple of years ago and since then all of the local weigh bridges have vanished

The last time I took the guy up the road in it and he had a heart attack 3 days later.......... eek

Strip everything off the car and before refitting it lighten it as much as you can whether thats by making it smaller with a grinder or file, drilling it or remanufacturing it from lighter material.
Mine is down to around 440kg still with all the chromework on it.

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

1kg is a massive saving from one component. 50grams is a big saving, when you are really into it.

I know of somone that was rallycrossing in the early 90's, they went to great pains to lighten a new shell they bought from ford, then found out that they wernt allowed too....

they then spent some considerable time welding back in the holes they had sawn out all over the place.... PMSL

Dont do too much. You can drill the youknowwhat out of any regular mini. But a collectable? i take it, being a paul smith, you have it on the road, then most lightening will just make it harder to live with, less desireable, more noisey, for little gain.

Sorry, rant over! im from a classic car background, please dont hold it against me.

p.s. I do well to hold my tongue on here most times. But good work to you all.

regards
Colin

As Tom says you have to look at every thing and ask how can this be made lighter, or is it even needed.

Hopefully the Maguire of death will be finished in time for Avon, no idea what it weighs but when we moved the rolling shell to the barn the two of us lifted it on an off the trailer.

EDIT: I take that back, hopefully it won't be finished as my balls are no where near big enough to drive it.

Mines currently weighing in at 570kg without fuel, 595 with. that's still with full glass/steel doors though.

i think the best areas to loose weight, are a carbon front, a rear beam setup (with a new boot floor and ally tank) and poly windows/lightened doors.

How good are you at push starting? that saves a starter motor and a battery. Dont need an alternator, can have a shorter fanbelt then.

But seriously, isnt weight saving more noticeable when its rotating or unsprung?

Yes, in order of benefit: rotating > unsprung > sprung mass

but of course it is much harder & more expensive to reduce the rotating mass of the engine than it is to strip some body deadener from the floor.

I see, guess ill be hacking bits of the shell apart first, then getting tricky machining pulleys and finding smaller alternators.

no always the case, imagine if you were to fit ultra lightweight engine rotating components, but left the car heavy,
you have reduced you engines inertia/kenetic energy. possibly to the point that getting the car off the line is a real pain,

you do need either a battery or alternator, something has to power the spark
