Rob, i tell my three girls to go for the best paid job they can tollerate, and i meen tollerate, no point working in a job you hate just because it pays good, but a well paid job will pay the bills easier, by tolleration you get through your working life without hopefully becoming bitter and twisted, the good pay will make lifew easier and possibly have some left over for good times and hobbies,

if i had the chance to be an Authodontist [spelling] i think i'd leap at the chance, anything to do with teeth , healthservice, teaching has got to have a stable future,

i knew someone who had his own Authodontistry making falsies and he lived in a bigger house than me and drove a much bigger car and was a good few years jounger too,

if its dentistry ,it has got to be a money maker,

If I'm being really honest. I fooking hate working and would rather sit on my arse all day, getting up occasionaly to fiddle with my mini.

In all honesty, you should just go and be a well paid male gigalo and have done with it.

To be fair, most people who are on benefits are better off than people that work every minute on the day.

So you can sit on your ass all day matey lol.

I have a BTEC national diploma in manufacturing engineering from college, and an HND in motorsport engineering from uni last year.

Was going to do the degree course for the engineering, a top up. Glad I didnt as I really think its a limited qualification!!

I say that, but I got a job at Rolls Royce a matter of weeks after I graduated. I got laid off thanks to the recession and have only just found work recently (8 months with no job), as an offshore engineer with a geosurvey company (vessels not rigs) on a wicked salary! Not motorsport!

I would reccomend getting in on some technical A-levels at college if I were you, i.e maths, physics and whatever else you can do to get yourself onto a course at uni.

If I were to have another go, id get some a-levels, (this doesnt limit you to engineering in the future), but will meet the requirements for a Mechanical Engineering degree.

With a mechanical engineering degree you really have a massive spectrum for an engineering career, like anything from weapons systems, precision engineering, automotive, you name it.

Wouldnt it be nice to work on a cool engineering project in the week and get paid for it, THEN go home with the cash you've earnt and go to town on your car on the weekends!

EDIT, forgot to mention the main reason of going to college, 16 year old girls. Being the age you are, if youre going to go back get on it ASAP while its just about legal for you to do so haha.

Unfortunately it seems like in some cases you're better off being on the rock and roll then getting a job, which shouldnt be the way at all.

As others have said, it's always better to take something in higher education then to just go straight in to a not so great job because you'l find yourself being in a never ending ring of crappy jobs, with no way out unless you get higher qualifications along the way.

Just read about a guy that got sacked from his job as a luggage man at arlanda airport, he surfed porn 90% of his working time! He got sacked for the porn not for mismanaging his work…wonder if they had many applicants when they advertised his job after the article ... :)

Don't whatever you do if you go to college do something specialised like Motorsport Engineering. Prob the biggest waste of two years and a substantial sum of money. In hindsight, mechanical engineering would have gone down much better.

Agree with most people on the mixing work and hobby thing, they don't mix well.

Grandad here.

I just told my boys to do something that they would enjoy doing because they would be doing it for a long time.

They both went into mechanical engineering and one is now a very senior exec with a multi national and the other is a skilled CNC miller. One probably earns three times as much as the other(guess which one) but both are equally stressed at their work and have trouble finding a work/life balance.

I guess this is mostly a reflection of the hard times we live in.

My advice would still be the same, but look at what people are buying - good service, practical skills(plumbing, electricians etc) and think about ploughing your own furrow, rather than following some one elses.

I was an office worker for most of my working life and messing about in the workshop till midnight was relaxation for me. I doubt it would have been the same if I was a mechanic all my life, as I started out to be.

Is any of this old tosh of any value to anyone ?

Ha, worklife balance....
It feels like it is just work atm... :(
However I think it's all about enjoying those moments however small they are.
Like watching the Aristo Cats with the girls and the youngest one falling asleep in one arm after a day of fun on the playground....

(Also agree with choosing engineering study; did Mech Engineering myself instead of something automotive, never regretted doing that.)

Dazed and Confused....

Finally a subject I can help with. Stay away from motorsport like a scabby clunge. My cousin did his degree at Loughboro uni and got straight in with Jaguar in the R&D dept. When they decided to re-enter F1 he was put on the design team and it nearly killed him. They don't have official working hours they just worked all hours god sent and that was throughout the year NOT just the season. He'd be in work at 6am and sometimes sleep at his desk because it was so high pressure and he nearly had a nervous breakdown. Financially he was fine cos he could never go out to spend money and if he did get a night free he'd come back to the good ol' Black Country, we'd go to the pub and he'd fall asleep drinkin his pint.
You could always join the army. They will help you resit GCSE's if you want and if you become a REME you gain GNVQ's as you work. Could be working on tanks, Apache's, driving ARV's and it's about the only thing apart from the computer nerds who leave and find another job fairly easy. Air Force and Navy have mechanical engineers as well. A lot end up working at places like BAE systems.
The other advantage is you're in a safe country or if you're posted to somewhere like Afghanistan you're safely tucked away.

The mechanics are on base, it's just the recovery vehicles that go into the field and by the time they're there the areas clear because Apaches are on station and a lot more ground troops. With the bases in Germany being sht down by the gov't there will only be bases in the UK, Belize and a few other outcrops
