Good work Pottsy that would be ideal and they do one with a 38mm hole.

Considering that those clamps take all the steering force of the car, I think its a shite idea.
Stauff clamps are to hold hydraulic pipes in place so they are secure, not to take sideways loading from a steering rack.

Just had a thought - Metro's have their steering rack fastened to the subframe. I have a metro front frame with rack sat on my scrap pile. I'll pull it apart at the weekend and see whats what.

Id rather see it on the subframe than mounted back on like that.
The old plate would have spread the load over a wide area, but you may find it flexing or it could even crack the floor there like the subframe sometimes does

Just weld the old bracket back on

Putting it on the subframe would be interesting though

Nice idea, there must be a way to save a bit of weight from it.

Re: Stauff clamps, agreed Tom, they're not super-strong! They were the only"plastic clamps" I could think of (other than P-clips *hehe!* )

This idea of mounting the rack on the subframe; OK it removes the relative movement between the rack and the wheels when there's a bit of front subframe movement. However, won't the relative movement then be between the rack and steering column? Any risk the splined do-da on the rack might shear?

I guess there's a case for it working if people have already tried it with no problems? Presumably a solid-mounted subframe is crucial.

Here is what the passenger side looks like. Dodgey camera phone photo I'm afraid though. It's an easy job to do. It makes dropping the front subframe off easier.

I'll get some better shots if anyone is interested when I take the proper camera out to the garage. *smiley*

Are those simply std U-bolts and some spacers?

Perhaps it will be up to the job then?

Not sure what cossierick has but by "plastic clamps" do you mean Stauff clamps?

What are the ones that hold anti roll bars in place.

Stauff clamps would be fine for an anti roll bar. Just not for a steering rack IN MY OPINION.

Unless you wanted to 'create' some torque steer

Those stauff clamps are on my anti roll bar and came with the kad kit and may get changed.

These are the rack clamps (sorry i carnt find a better pic)

There from a pick up that races at rockingham around the oval (150mph) so if they can handel that around a corner then am sure they will be fine on the mini.

They arnt the same as in the earlier pic tho, mine are more a solid block and have a grove machined out to stop the rack sliding side to side.

Probably the reason behind the rubber coupling on the metro.

I believe the metro has U bolts similar to the GTM to hold the rack on.

I guess the subframe would need to be solid mounted and be quite rigid to do this without risking damaging the column/rack.

Also would it not bring the rack slightly further away from the column?

Metro Steering rack:

Looks like it's just a couple of U bolts through the frame.

Allthough the metro rack looks to have a couple of forks for the U bolts to sit it:
