The problem is that the way the suspension works means that as the suspension compresses the effective rate (owing to the geometry) reduces. The rubber doughnut compensates for this by having an increasing rate as it is compressed. changing to spings menas that this increasing rate is lost. Yes it will be softer, but under cornering you will not get an increase in rate which is need to prevent massive roll.

If you fit the replacement coil springs, you'll really need an ARB to compensate.

Coilovers are a better solution (if you don't want doughnuts), as they mount to points on the suspension less sensetive to change in geometry.

I have no experience as new to the Mini scene but would it be an idea to change the rubber cones for some coil springs? I was reading a Mini mag the other day (not sure which one), but it mentioned about better ride quality and how to fit them.

I did consider them myself but if you pirce up hi-lo, dampers and coil spring, you might as well go for coil over suspension.

I don't see a problem with the rubber springs. If they were that bad they would have been done away with long ago.

There is a better selection on the market now with the Moulton Smooth A Ride and Minispares red and yellow dots, so I really do not see the point going to springs unless you intend doing away with the subframe.

This is just my opinion, and i'm not saying I am right *wink*

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I have KYB gas adjust and standard cones. Personally I think it rides really nice but it does feel like it rolls a little too much in the corners. I will be trying some adjustable ones in the feature but I haven't made my mind up on Wich ones yet.

I had KYB gas adjust and collapsed cones on my last mini. Had a good ride, no body roll and went round bends like it was on rails.

I like the kyb gas adjusts. Had them on my estate then moved them to the ex's sportspack mpi.

they we a million miles better than the koni's that were on before.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I tried to get some old cones but when I changed them it was exactly the same as the ones I had. No harder and just as much bodyroll.

I'm in the middle of writing an article for miniworld on this exact subject. I can't say too much but it'll open your eyes as to the wonders of that small black bouncy thing and subsequently the decisions you make if you ever wanted to replace it with something else.

For those that don't know I began my engineering life 20 years ago as a design engineer for the major at the time, uk based oem supplier of metal to rubber bonded bushes - I've designed my way out of more problems than I care to ever again, after this I designed passive and semi active engine mounts for the VW/Audi group at Avon VMS, before moving to Lotus as their suspension bush expert for a few years so I'm perfectly qualified to tackle this subject.

The next article I will do will be on bolted joints/torque etc - its about time that subject was opened up and put a few mis-conceptions to bed, again it'll probably be through Miniworld or Minimag

In the meantime its a good topic and WilH has made some valid points

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!
