HMM where a product of there own management. They didn't change their model and adapt to the way the world works now. Going bust is inevitable if you blindly carry on doing what you have always done. I disagree with supermarkets being banks, insurers etc, but it seems like they are the only business left that are able to look at the world and provide what people want - convenience and low prices. Majority of businesses never moved with the times, GAME got lucky, as they could downsize their business without it having a massive effect, I mean in swindon alone there was 4 GAME stores inc gamestation - down to 1 now which works ideally Just saying what Wil said, Why should our taxes go on bailing out a company that didnt think it was appropriate to adjust their business model with technological advances. I was thinking the same as Wil (what a surprise). I think it could be good for independants. And as I hated HMV, Virgin and the like I would welcome some more independants back.

Looking on the interweb, their directors gave themselves a 50% bonus and salary hike in 2009 (HMM annual report 2010 page 30) even though the company was on the rocks.

I could be worse guys, your president could spend R250 million of tax payers money on his personal compound, even though the gold price has risen by 400% in the last 10 years your biggest goldmines could be going bang because the workers have been striking for 2 months straight. Over 400 rhinos could of been poached last year alone and their horns sold to asian guys with small winkies. Oh and then you could also run the risk of a bunch of guys breaking into your house and killing you but only after you have watched them rape your wife.
"So wat we gonna do tonight Brain?"

Seems typical of this day and age. There needs to be some form of corporate consequences for these blatant acts of lunacy. e.g. banned from being a director for x years. |

The thing is that directors contracts are not like our normal employment contracts. Even though it is called a bonus it is not really what we understand as a bonus. It is not extra to their pay as we see a bonus it is prt of their pay and it should reflect their performance. But without knowledge of their contract or how their performance is measured it is impossible to make a judgement on what 50% means. http://www.twin-turbo.co.uk

Hmv came into my town, forced all the little independent shops to close and now they have been beaten at their own game, thrashed by the likes of amazon etc who are cheaper and offer more choice. Serves them right. Shame for the staff though |

It is capitalism in action. Successful firms prosper, others fail. Don't like it? Then move to, oh I don't know, North Korea?
