I did exactly the same Stu but used LED's might have been less hassle to do what you mentioned though

will try and get some pics tomorrow. i doubt it was less hassle. i had to use a piece of tube because i'm using a 12v 180w runway approach light bulb and holder and it melted the first lens because it was too close!!! ha ha balls to the blower!!!

just a light that lights up red will do (even if it looks temporarily) no matter how bright it is ! as long as the warning light on the switch works when it is pressed and its center or o/s of the rear of the car. it can even work independently of the light switch
