I came across this on one of the MG groups. I've not heard of tapping the oil galleries & fitting grub screw before, so I was wandering if anyone has tried it. Personally I can't any benefit on a road car, but whilst I'm machining my block I thought I'd see what people's views were.

The other option is to tap the end of one of the galleries and use it for an oil feed to the turbo rather than the collection of tee-pieces which most people have on the front of their engines.

Here's my block:

If it's a road car or not, does that matter? So debris in the oil galleries is OK on a road car? I think not.

stowmaket suffolk

always remove them, but just refit push in ones, cost buggerall, easy to remove.

but a good idea for the turbo as long as you use the one on the clutch end of gallery 8.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

What I was thinking as on a road car the engine is not stripped down as often as a race car, so you might as well stick with the standard plugs, rip them out when you rebuild the engine and press new ones it. Obviously you still need to clean out the oil ways when rebuilding the engine that's just common sense.

I just had a look at one of my engines and noticed that all bar one one gallery plug are obscured by either the timing chain or the clutch housing so this idea is a no go.

I can see no reason why that is a no go... You have a open end on the pressurised oil gallery, why not use that one?

I personally drill & tap the 4 main galleries 3/8" BSP and use the same alan plug in vegards pic

the two other ports i drill and tap 1/8"BSP the one under the pressure relief valve & the one under the block where it mates to the gearbox

joey, an easy one is remove the old plugs the 4 side ones.
now!... its the right size well..... a few though over size and run a 1/4" bsp tap in there use a little low strength stud lock to seal the threads no need to drill these as the tap will give more than enough threads for low pressure use

the 2 others on the front, still drill and tap for 1/8" bsp

I've literally just done this today!! managed to get hold of a tap but they do them o ebay for like a fiver.
Didnt drill it hole was perfect size to begin with (for 1/4bsp anyhoo)
I tapped the small plugged passage on the g,box mating face and the one intersecting it for M8 grubscrews with some hydraulic locking compound.
1/4"BSPT (tapered) plugs were 22p each fro mmy local fastenings shop but min order was a fiver so i bought loads of capheads and tapped the block-gearbox fixings to M8.
Yo Benross I only have one large plug either side, you speak of four?!
Potential oil feed idea tho, i already have oil press, temp and original press light running from the christmass tree of tee-pieces on the front lol..
