Yeovil,ZomerZet! The Land of the Cider tree!

Hi, fairly new to the K head buisness, but have recently invested in the Specialist components how to book (Havent quite got round to reading in inside and out yet!) but Ive been offered both 16v and 8v heads, the 8v being considerably cheaper than the 16v, but whats the best way to go?? What sort of power would I be looking at out of a NA 8valver? Was thinking of going turbo or supercharged at later date but just want to start with the basic coversion? Any tips would be greatly apprieciated:cool:

Many thanks

Rob

I have thought this through and measured both as much as I can (well flow figures came from a combination of this site and the build guide from SC).

To my mind for a road based turbo'd car 8V is the way to go. The instalation is easier to my mind and the flow of the head (especially if I am right about my thoughts as to porting it) is enough to provide big numbers. Also by their very nature 16v's are going to need to be rev'd a bit higher to get the best out of them.

If I was going NA then it'd be a 16V for sure.

What do you want from the car when completed?
How friendly are you with the bank?
What floats your personal boat the most?

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Considering the amount of work involved in both conversions, I would go for 16V.

As Roger says, especially if your going N/A.

im still going to go down the road of using my 8v head with the thought of a possible blower in the future!
it really depends on if you can get hold of a decent 16v head or not.

Ive been told that the 16v revs alot better than the 8v but aparently the 8v sounds alot more beefy.

I found that with my 2.0 8v clubman, the 8v sounded real mean but when I put the 16v in it used to rev really high but didnt sound as nice.

But hey its down to your preferance

when i drove a 10" wheeled Mini last it felt insane !

How it sounds is irrelevant surely .... it's how it goes.

All other things being equal....

8V will be more progressive with a wider torque band (ie. come in lower down the rev range) but not rev as freely (only of use if your planning on reving it high and remember this is a bike head so should be fine to well over 7500 anyway).

16V will rev freer but have a narrow torque spread (not starting till later) and will feel a little 'flat' at low revs. It should be able to sustain higher revs.

As I said that is with all other things equal.

The 16V head looks like it flows a little better but as far as I can tell that is only going to be relevent if the engine build can set up to make use of higher revs.

+1mm valves in the 8v head (really have got to get around to proving the ones I have can be fitted) and the flow will be very similar to a 16V with out compromising the low down torque (to the level of the 16v I mean ... there will be some effect from the larger valves)

It really is a compromise (as all things engine related are).

If your going to rev the nuts off it then go for a 16v ..... if you want to have a progressive and wide torque spread go 8v

8v still flows better than all but the best 5 porters from the data available to me with room to improve it further.

Worth thinking about, 8v is easier to do a single plenum instal on as injectors are mounted in head .... means less front overhang and thus more space of an IC .... might make a turbo install significantly easier .... that said Jimster got it all in with a 16V head.
