Cool thread idea.

My grandad worked in Longbridge for 6 years which included 1959. He helped assemble the first ever mini. Funny thing is that I only found that out years after I got interested in minis

sallys gap. garden of Ireland

i am related to a Saint Eustace, also known as Eustachius or Eustathius, was a legendary Christian martyr who lived in the 2nd century AD.

His family then moved to ireland, to live in wicklow and were later to be heavily proactive in the cromwellian reballian i live now near a town called 'Ballymore-eustace', where most of my family still live. (dont mention the pale)

There is a massive church built in paris in his honor. in french it is Eustache

edit: not the same eustace as in the battle of sandwich though. he was a wimp!!

My dad's been doing some digging on our family tree recently funnily enough.

Theres a high chance I may actually be related to "Henry Hudson" who discovered Hudson bay in Canada.

Spooky thing is, he had several sons, two of which were called Richard Hudson, and Oliver Hudson.

My full name is Richard Oliver Hudson!

It seems they're common names passed down through the Henry Hudson generation, pretty cool.

Oh and he also found, that the "Hudson" family was british, and they emigrated to america (when Henry Hudson became an explorer), but a majority of them moved back to the UK around the 1700's and were a well known, wealthy family in a town called Emsworth, which is about 15 mins from where I live!

we traced my family tree back some time ago, and found that my family originated from Ireland, around the same time Henry fords family was there. they then moved to america and my family moved here.
not sure of a definate connect but good to investigate it. had no royalties as of yet tho!!!

Not famous but interesting all the same, my great great uncle walter stubbs race was in the army during the ww2.

Walter enlisted in the regular army, Yorkshire & Lancashire Regiment, 19th Sept. 1922.

Embarked for Germany 15th March 1923. British Army of Occupation.

Returned to UK 18th January 1926.

He left the army on 18th Nov. 1929.

Somehow he got involved in the evacuation of Dunkirk when he and a friend got a small boat to pick up soldiers escaping from France. His friend I know was shot in the arm, but they made it back to Dover.

Re-enlisted 14th Sept. 1940 Yorkshire & Lancashire Regiment.

( At about this time, the Yorks & Lancs were absorbed into the Royal Engineers )

Walter was injured in North Africa. He was shot in the face and had plastic surgery and skin grafts. However, by the time he returned to England, much of this injury had healed, but of course he had a pronouced scar across his cheek. He was awarded the Military Cross about this time.

He spoke both Germany and Arabic fluently, so doubtless this skill was of considerable use in North Africa.

He returned to England early 1944, and trained as a glider pilot. On D-day, he flew gliders carrying airborne commandos into Caen, France. He must have been one of the very few pilots to survive that exercise.

Later in 1944, he returned to UK, and was sent to Scotland. Later he died in the then, military hospital at Buchanan. The cause of death was cancer not war wounds."

The above history comes from his Son who now lives in Australia, i recently visited his grave which was a very emotional experience.

Hope I havent bored any you with the family lecture

the last one is me and the missis at one of the 40s weekends we go on.

From QI...

"Mathematically speaking, everyone in Europe is related to Charlemagne. This is because everyone has two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents and so on. By the time you get to the 13th century, you have more direct ancestors than have ever been human beings - about 80 billion. Therefore you must have shared ancestors. In 1995, a man called Mark Humphries at Dublin University discovered this information. He discovered his was wife was King Edward III's great-granddaughter 20 generations down the line. After closer examination, he discovered his wife was also related to Hermann Goring and American explorer Daniel Boone. He then managed to calculate the mathematics of the information."

So you all have lots and lots of famous ancestors, and most of you share them too.
