so some of you may have read that i start college (day release)for an apprenticeship at the end of the month.

but ive got major doubts if this is the career for me.

so tonight ive had a look at courses for engineering, motorsport ect just stuff im actually intrested in.

now my heads thinking i could go along with the work college and then if the opportunity arises leave the lot and do something else.
ive sent of for a couple of leaflets so will look at my options.

the thing i think ill struggle with most is the lack of qualifications for the record ive only got std grades in english and maths (and before anybody says its not because im thick :p)

so really im just rambling and thinking aloud.

I always thought it would be quite fun playing with false teeth

Plus if you get a motorsport qualification it doesnt mean you will find a job in it

well im just finishing an apprenticeship in light vehicle maintainance and am looking at going to uni to do a motorsport engineering degree . Im also build my own race/trackday car so i wouldnt say its stunted my enthusiasm. IMO if its in your blood then you'll be happy doing it for as long as you do it....job or hobby.

Get a trade under your belt (as they say), do the apprenticeship and if after that you want to do something else, so be it.
It will show any employer in any job that you are competent, hard working and able to learn efficiently.
Dentistry will always be needed so its a good one to have, motor trade, for example, is dying/dead so a lot of us are fooked right now.

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Goto college the student life is not as Ibiza as uni life but just as fun plus on the side you come out with a qualification in an industry that will earn you bucks!

On a side note a mates son did a course in motor sports and races grass track for the black nights. So far on the back of his course he got a placement at Williams at Silverstone and is now working for Radical. He is at this moment pit crew for a car racing in Germany on request.

My point is what ever you do go to college.

It depends what your qualifications lead to, I went to uni for 8 years and so far it has got me no where. Finally after months of unemployment I have a job offer but it's with a company with a bad reputation. Not complaining as I'm glad to have something with the way things are at the moment but I know a lot of people that went into tertiary education and got nothing out of it.

Hit the nail on the head there! ^^^^

I studied motorsport, tried to get a job at the end of it with no luck. I was to "inexperienced", I then went on to do an appreticeship in engineering and by that time is was "too old" (22) to start working in motorsport. From what I gather they want someone that is 16 with good grades that they can mould into what they want.

My 2 years doing a hnd appear to have been wasted also for being too old and not having any experience in what I studied.

If only I knew all of this years ago, I would have done A levels that related to each other and done something interesting at uni to get me started on a graduate scheme

Oh well, lets hope there is an after life to try again in........

The best place to be in the current climate is in college or uni! Get a grant and get your qualification in what ever as the world around you sorts itself out then come out at the end as things are getting back to some form of normality

pick something your going to enjoy doing for the rest of your life.

mucking about with the cars might be enjoyable but when you rely on it for a living, the enthusiasm disapears very quickly for your own project- been there done that

This probably is a good time to be learning and our current choice is likely to have an ongoing requirement in the future, unlike some

not always true matty, i got my apprenticship at 18/19, granted i no-longer have it but i wish i did, i now work at sainsburys and i hate it, the only thing that keeps me going and on the look for a new career is my misses and my family.

imo what ever you do make sure it right for you.

Just make sure you pick the right degree. I didn't. dropped out of uni after 2 years and started at the bottom of the dogs body ladder. I have a good 10 years work behind me now and have had a descent career to date, but it's taken a lot of hard work to get there.

That said, my little brother did his ellectronics degree and then spent 2 years looking for a job. The job he got though, was with the company that makes the chips that are in eveything and he is currently on his third visit to the US this year having been in china last week....

EDIT: It's fair to say that I am board shitless in my carrer and wouldn't be bothered if I never went back again, but I'be saddled myself with a mortgage and an expensive hobby so I'm stuck with it :-

IM pretty much in the same boat kid, if i could drop I.T i would without a doubt, but the mortgage says otherwise, Id love to go into minis full time, running a mailorder buisness or something like that but that can wait! Appreticeships are the way foward imo! You have your foot in the door and if the employer thinks anything of you they should set you on!
