Actually it's Hillman (two L's) Imp and I've had a few in my time.

Before these days of turbos I could get a lot more performance out of a 998cc wet liner Imp engine than any similar Mini engine.

And there are some people with Imps experimenting with both turbos and superchargers......

I still have a 998 wet liner engine in my garage........ just a shame most of the remaining shells are rotten or overpriced.

EDIT - typos

this person had done a full shell rebuild and it was really nice! blue and silver with a vinyl roof. i think he had it bored to around a 1.1 and had twin weber 40's on it! he said it would be around 110bhp.

Yes, the wet liners, standard at 998cc can be taken out to 1140cc IIRC - but that's it, nothing more unless you start messing with the crank.

The reason for the high power is they are very short stroke engines so can rev very high. If you see him again, tell him to go fuel injection, webers are a waste of money on an 8 port engine.

OK, so it is not a war but a friendly contest between two owners of different car brands.

Can end up to be pretty emulative actually !

14th photo (5th row, right handside) is much better.

The fastback (or coupe) version - there were two derivatives, Imp Californian (my flatmate had one) and Sunbeam Stilletto (I had one for a while but it had terminal rot). We both had 998 engines with a downdraft 28/36 Webber.

The one in the Retrorides picture is a cross between the two, it has the Sunbeam badge and twin headlights (ie, Stilletto) but is missing the Stilletto's vinyl roof....

I still keep my eye on the small ads, newsagents windows etc. for a decent one but the fastbacks are now as rare as hen's teeth.

If you look closely at the photo in Retrorides it has a Sunbeam badge.

The Californian definately had a Hillman badge (well my flatmate's one did anyway...).

From memory, only the Sunbeam (Stilletto) had both the twin headlights and the vinyl roof (mine was resprayed Fiat yellow with a black vinyl roof, stunning.....).

I can't for the life of me remember what the Chamois coupe had (re. headlights or roof) but it would have had a Singer front badge......

But I would love to get my hands on one of the coupe/fastback shells to restore.
