For those that don't know, I built a 1600 GTI engine and turbocharged it, not done before to my knowledge. As it was untested waters especially with regards to the integrity of the pistons under boost pressure, I used cheapo standard bits, really just to see if it would work.

As it turns out the pistons are more than man enough for the job, and it was the cheap standard head gasket that has failed. The good news is that the head and liners are unmarked, and that the pistons are also unmarked, not a hint of det.

I've now ordered an uprated super dooper gasket which should hopefully do the business.

The most suprising thing given the state of the gasket is that the car drove me home at 75mph with normal water temp! It was only when the revs dropped below 2500rpm that it would start spewing water out of the back....

Glad to hear it's nothing terminal, as you say, odd that it sort of "fixed" itself under certain loads.

That's not too bad. What power did it make, around 200 bananas?

Something around that, 192 on the day, or 204 after Roberts tweaks to the graph.

Obviously I am claiming 204.

Would have been apt if he'd tweaked it to 205...

I bloody love this car, even more so after hearing it on the rollers. It sounds so aggressive on boost.

suprised that was running that well with that gasket!

friend of mine has a 205 with an 8v rallye engine in it thats turbo'd...205's are cool!

I can only presume you've had no other real issues post setup?

Cheers for the comments chaps, the head is off for a skim today so I'll hopefully have it back together later this week with any luck.

I don't suppose anyone got the noise on video did they? I know it makes a bit of a racket but I was suprised about how it sounded when it comes on boost.

'wintersurfer' might have it, but we arrived just as the Pug was going on, so might not have had the camera out.

Update on this, its been back together for about 2 weeks now, the head was pretty flat and only needed a light 10 thou skim to clean it up. The valve guides are a tiny bit on the loose side but I decided to leave them be seeing as the turbo makes everything a tad hotter than Peugeot originally intended.

Back on the road and it is going as well as ever, had a slight issue with missing boost pressure that turned out to be some mayo gunk in the boost control valve from the head gasket issue, that is now sorted.
