I have given up getting anything other than tools and oil and the like from Halfords.

Actual car parts I get from Motorfactors type places.

Luckily I get minispares hand delivered.

I was going to nip in and get that one from coalvile at some point. Gives me a reason to get the mini out and at 95p it's a cheap spare.

I went in there for some alloys and tyres for my old yaris, and after a 15 minute discusion (arguement) I eventually got out of the store with the wheels as the computer said they were the wrong ofset, even though they were the perfect fit.

one day boost will be mine!

I gave up long ago when every time I asked for something simple, such as a drive belt or brake fitting kits, the usual reply was, "have you tried the motor factors round the corner? we no longer stock them"

I think they are only good for screen wash and air freshners these days.

Andrew page seems to come up trumps most of the time for me. Im not so sure they would let me spend an hour looking through their ignition leads for something that suits, like I did in Halfords 4 years back *happy*

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Out of interest....why would you use Halfords for stuff like that instead of a motor factors ?

I wouldnt even contemplate looking for car parts in Halfords !! Unless it was a desperate last resort.

motor factors sell car parts...hence I go there lol

Halfords are good for consumables, oil, screen wash, bulbs, spray paint, odds & ends, etc. as they are usually easy to get to and open better hours. However their parts range is poor, their customer service & knowledge is usually poor (there are some staff the opposite of this, at which point you wonder if you're in the wrong shop!) and some of their prices are excessive.

Convenience is worth a lot, but it would be better if they also had what you wanted!

However I keep hearing about excellent price drops with the use of their trade card. Anyone have one?
Anyone able to help me get one?! My local store wouldn't accept a fat A4 file of receipts as proof I spend a lot of money on maintinaing my cars :(

Theyre good for tools, and fluids and the odd bits and pieces. As far as parts are concerned, theyre a load of crap. And having a mates trade card to hand makes a fair bit of difference to the steep prices, else id never use them at all.

Somewhere around Swindon

Trade card is superb
They will also order parts in for you and i have found them cheaper sometimes than motor factors even with trade discount.

That said i have also sometime found main dealer parts cheaper than motor factors

Simple: Halfords are open until 8 at night whilst most motor factors close at 5 and I rarely finish work before 6. I might not rate them that highly but they tend to be more useful than a shop that's shut.

It is always worth phoning around now, including main dealers even for basic parts. In some cases main dealers are even cheaper than the likes of ECP and other specialists.

I agree the handiness of their open hours is good. But their prices really are far higher here than even the dearest motor factors.

I think that's because their average customer is somebody who just puts petrol in and drives. Most people who know a little about cars steer clear. I just use them for UPOL weld through primer and tools when they have an offer on, unless I'm really stuck.

The trade card really makes the difference, stuff like bulbs are very expensive at marked price, but with trade card very cheap. Batteries also get a very good discount with trade card, plus a 4 yr guarantee.
