I been trying to get my grubby mits on a decent file for aluminium, but can't seen to find anywhere that sells the type im after.

Im after the really coarse type with deep teeth that run accross the width of the file. Ive always known them as a mill file, but searching for that gives me nothing?

Does anyone know the correct name for it or where to get one?

Its not a bastard file btw. *hehe!*

Cheers
Matt

Ah spot on, they are both the kind I am after.

Paul - in that link of yours it says its £8.95 + VAT and it says you get 10 in a pack...can that be right? Seems a little cheap!

TBH I just used the link as a picture. It does seem very cheap, theyre probably fairly soft and wont last long but probably fine for DIY stuff. Stainless steel are better but are expensive. Id go for them though at that price for 10

I seriously doubt it!

Cheers Neil.

I reckon I can loose another 8-10kgs with the bits I have in mind.

Slightly O/T but will a motor still work with an aluminium housing?

It depends if the housing makes part of the motor as per a starter or wiper motor

I seriously doubt it!

Don't they just house the field windings? Basically just a big sleeve?

Most motor bodies carry an electrical field. I tried thinning down a wiper motor outer housing as much as possible and it just went very slow with no torque, plus my sparky mate at Astons said theyre thick steel for a good reason - that was the reason

I seriously doubt it!

Bi late for the suggestion Matt, but dipping the file in paraffin after each few strokes will keep it from clogging -try it.

Ah thats that idea put to bed then! I thought there would be some reason behind them being such a lump of metal, but couldn't think why.

Will give that a go Dave, I'll need to use finer files for finishing anyway.

Something like duck oil also works quite well when filing ally, as anyone who saw me in action on Simons plenum at Avon will testify.

I keep a few blocks of chalk handy to wipe over the teeth of my files. Work's a treat.

My files arrived today, looking pretty groovey!

They cut really well, and I haven't clogged at all, fingers crossed they'll last a while.
