A company rebuilt my transmission several years ago, and I'm now finally at the point of having mated it to the block. Upon attempting to fit the clutch housing over the gears, I noted some fitment issues.

Long story short, it seems that they rebuilt my gearbox with a standard size A+ transmission input bearing (first motion bearing?), but the Metro Turbo was fitted with a larger sized bearing than the standard A+. They've offered me a standard A+ clutch housing (in trade for an older A clutch housing and cover), but I wonder if I should press for the proper bearing assembly and use my original, tatty turbo clutch housing.

Is there a problem with the smaller bearing being used on a turbo motor? I figure there must be an issue, since MG went to the larger size, but am not sure...

Any advice on this would be appreciated!

You need to have a complete bearing - the bearing inner race which is on the input shaft and the outer which is pressed into the housing. They are a matched set and so vary in size between models and suppliers

I seriously doubt it!

I wouldn't worry about using the turbo bearing, the std one copes quite fine in my experience

Thank you both for your input! I'll trade out my buggered housing for a better A+ model, then.

And Paul, I believe that they gave me the race when they rebuilt the motor, but, five years and one move later, I'm not sure where the darned thing is. I hope that I can either find it or obtain a replacement race without going the whole bearing set route!

Cheers, all!

If you cannot find it you HAVE to go the whole bearing route

I seriously doubt it!

Thanks, Paul. Assuming I can't find it, would you recommend accepting the trade and going with the standard bearing, or trying to find the proper turbo bearing (which is apparently difficult to find in the USA) to use with my existing housing?

UPDATE: Hot dog! Found the race! Looks to be only slightly smaller than the turbo race, so I'll take up the vendor on the A+ housing and call it done.
