i`ve always used an outer ring with 3 grooved ground into it, a small/short one,,, a medium one & a larger/longer groove,,, & the deal is that you fit the first spring & ball & push the ring over a bit,,, then fit the 2nd spring & ball & poush the ring further over & then the 3rd & push it home completely,,, then fit the outer ring that you will actually use & slip it over pushing the tool off

my dad did this trick back in about 1964-ish & i`ve shown heaps of people how to make their own ever since

but sorry people, i didn`t realise that this twisty type tool was already avaliable

i`ll let david know & we won`t bother pushing it to anyone any further
