I have an R53 MINI and i think its a great daily, intended to do some small mods, reduced pulley, intake etc..

Thought i would have a look around some of the MINI forums..

Fook there are some massive nobs on the internet - some forums are so clicky, full of people that are always 'right' and have no time for anyone that deviates off what they perceived to be the only way. Keyboard warriors that get sucked off regularly by the other members too scared to say anything different.

Anyone else experience things like this? really puts me off bothering..

rant over.

Sounds like most forums I've been on over the years when owning 'normal' cars. Always some tit who managed change his own flat without calling the AA and then thinks they designed and built the car. Needless to say I didn't bother with them for long.

Yes I have experianced this, infact this is the first forum where I feel its not the case.

The clio forum im on clio16valver.co.uk is VERY much like this, I've been a member on there since I was 16 (4 years now) and still feel a bit of an outcast, ive been to loads of meets so am known but they still try to alienate me; plus its owner is all about the money.

I come here and tbh I feel more invited to join in the banter and to post my opinions/ideas and that I wont get slagged off in some super secret part of the forum viewable only to "staff members"

When I was looking to buy a landrover I signed up to a forum and they didn't want to help at all and seemed a bit sarcastic...

It seems to depend a lot on what the car is, and the type of person that typically owns it. I looked on the BINI forums about charger pulleys, all the advice is basically "take it to a specialist have them do it" - I couldn't find a single post of someone doing it themselves. Forums for my Audi A4 are much the same, all they really seem interested in is retro fitting various OE options onto your car, in fairness some decent info on certain things, but again when looking for cambelt info, no one will dare attempt it themselves.
For older stuff I find people much more likely to get stuck in. There are a couple of good examples I use regularly, one is the 205gti drivers forum, there is a lot of good knowledge and no shortage of people getting stuck in, also the car is changing from a bargain cheap hot hatch into something you buy because you want one, as for the price of a 205 GTI now you can buy a 172 Clio or a civic Type r both of which are much quicker in a straight line than a 127bhp 8v 1900 Peugeot.
The other good example is the Pajero forum I use, the car is now at an age and price where a lot of people are wanting to do work on it themselves, as otherwise the maintenance costs would be high for a cheap old 4x4, thus again there is lots if info and a friendly crowd. I think the age range also helps, as the age range is from late 20's up, and older people are less likely to engage in forum elite-ism in my experience.

this is funny really as im googleing some piston numbers and it put me on to another mini forum as they are 998 pistons in the same thread it talks about the 12g202 head and where its from. No matter how many people say its available from the 1098 this muppet just keeps coming back saying its only from a 997 cooper as it wasnt available when they made the 1098! lol. do you think these type of people ever go back and re read threads and feel ever so slightly embarrassed?

Tom, i think your right, i find nearly all classic forums and the (as you describe it) 'something you buy because you want one' forums very good and normally accommodating.

Also lets be fair not all modern forums are turd, i have managed to find one that doesnt want to make you fell like everyone is better than you.

I have specifically not mentioned any other forum names because not only is it frowned upon on here (and rightly so) but also looking at new forums for the first time i find it very off putting as a noob reading posts by members slagging off another forum - it just makes them look big headed, and for me not to want to join in because i might say something they don't agree with.

I have found there to be a divide between two specific MINI forums, one accommodating to all, be its the lad who likes halfords stick on, the 12 second quarter guy and everything in between.. the other that slags that forum off is only interested in one aspect and if you don't conform it basically has a 'you can get fucked' attitude... doesn't make for good reading to a new member.
