... for the rather large envelope that arrived earlier today.

I guess you must have been over in the UK in the last few days as it had a UK stamp on the package.

I guess the photos on the calendar are nothing compared to seeing the real thing, we will definitely do it later this year or early next, especially after our taster of 3 days in Oslo last month (obviously way too far south for the Lights but enough to see everything else you said was right).

It's a Norwegian calendar of the Northern Lights, before the usual TM smut kicks in, Vegard has been helping me with the best way to see them. (it's one of the things on my list of things to do before I die).

For what it is worth, we did a road trip around Norway a few years back; as a fantastic trip but didn't get too far north. Still planning the 2nd trip!

Sorry boys. I don't think a road trip to see the northern light in our minis are what you think it is. You have to drive pretty long north, in the winter *wink*
However, a nice drive in Norway are fantastic. Check out the gallery here: . This is a friend of mine who arrange and looks very "stiff upper lip" but are all about having fun and a nice drive :) I am up for a drive :)

I'm up for that! TM Northern division road trip to Norway, but remember chaps, it'll need to be nearer the summer months than the winter months, otherwise i'm taking the modern car*happy*

Perhaps start a plan for next year? at least for me i'll be able to plan it in since the rest of this year is already messed up *oh well*

Rod, not a problem. I immediately thought of you when I saw the calendar.

If you guys come, I guess you should come for the annual Mini Meet.

Not sure where or when that's in 2014 though.

Charging through Denmark to get the ferry in Copenhagen is a nice thing to start a journey with *wink*

I agree, through Denmark it is :), but if you want to see the Northern light I would advice not driving the mini, its about 1800 Km to go to where its plausibel to see them, on crap roads mostly, AND it would need to be during winter, as in the summer its midnight sun that far north.

let me know if you are ever in Oslo though, I live there:)

Road trip sounds tempting!

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

It does, but Summer only for all the reasons above.

Northern Lights have to be Winter and Vegard has suggested to me the best ways of getting to the right place at (hopefully) the right time and none of the suggestions are driving :)

We were in Oslo last month, just 3 nights, for a quick look around. When we come back for the Lights, if we choose the easy way and fly to Tromsø it will almost certainly be via Oslo as the direct flights from Stansted are discontinued.
Even if we do one of the Hurtigruten cruises (one of Vegard's suggestions) we'll still fly via Oslo in at least one direction and stop over a couple of nights.

Hurtigruten is probably going to be a really nice trip. Its fairly costly though. Flights or Hurtigruten is by far the best options in my mind.

Yes, but little compared to the price of a beer......

I knew it was going to be expensive - I've been to Sweden on company business, but Norway.....

Cheapest I paid was 79 Krone at the Telenor Arena but 109 Krone at the hotel.

The best exchange rate I got at the time was 8.4 and taking into account a Norwegian large beer is 600ml (so about 15% bigger than a pint) it's about £8.50 - £10.00 per pint...

So, Road trippers beware :)

(beware of evenings only of course unless you all have a designated driver for daytime)

Rod. Have a look here. I took pictures of "Hurtigruten" for you as mentioned.

When we were in Geirangerfjorden:

Two F16s flew past us inside the valley....The sound was immense. Just a matter of being at the right place at the right time..

Come see it :)

Vegard, what the price of petrol like out there?[/quote]

If it's anything like the cost of a taxi your in trouble.. Did a weeks work in Norway last year and I had to get a taxi in and out to the hotel everyday. Worked out around £30 for a 7km trip!

Did consider hiring a car but would have been bankrupt if I did... A very stunning country with breathtaking views, but also very expensive.

(that was my experience anyway, in no way am I disrespecting anyone's country)

Thanks for the photos Vegard, still undecided whether to go with the Hurtigruten cruise ships or just fly (or train/coach) from Oslo up to Tromsø.

The ship looks great but, as you've already told me, you don't get to see the lights in summer and the cruise is mostly in dark in the winter.

Ideally I'd do a bit of both, one in summer, one in winter but Anna has blown most of her leave entitlement for this year after tricking me into a 3 1/2 week holiday in Singapore/Aus/Tazmania/HK a couple of months ago.

And as per the others, yes, Norway is expensive, but it's all relative to wages vs. cost of living in any country.

It's just the exchange rate that decides as neither of us use the Euro currency.
