hi

just rebuilt my engine and fitted a 4 pin diff

today I fitted the engine and tried to move it (pushing) and it was like pushing it with the handbrake on!

so I jacked the rear end up to see if the brakes were binding etc as it been sat for a while, they were fine,

then jacked up the front and both wheels when turned individually turn fine, but when i got my mate to turn the other wheel the same way as me, it wouldnt budge!

so im assuming ive done something wrong to the diff? (ive not put the shim in as it was damaged)

can not adding the shim really make that happen? or is there something else? oh and its not in gear lol

cheers

Didn't you check that the diff worked after fitting it?
Shimming the diff properly is very important, but not doing it shouldn't make it bind. I think you've assembled the diff itself wrongly. Sorry, engine out job ....

By the way. Why do you think the shims are there? For no reason??

You MUST set the correct pre load on the bearings with shims of varying sizes

I seriously doubt it!

There is a lot of information missing here.

Questions.............

The diff was assembled........ did this include the crown wheel?

If the diff included the crown wheel......... Was the crown wheel the same 'ratio' as the one you removed?

Daft question really........... did you put the gearbox into neutral?..........(try turning the wheels but with the clutch disengaged)

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I put the crown wheel on which was the same as the one removed from the old diff

box is in neutral, and the wheels still wouldn't turn when the clutch was disengaged

cheers

Did you put the fibre washer in between the crown wheel and the output shaft?

when you spin one wheel, the other spins the opposite direction?
but when you try to spin both wheels the same direction its stiff?

the diff sound like its working to me, but something is stopping the whole lot rotating
is the only thing you changed -the diff?...i would first of all check that the diff 'cage' is not touching the case and did you shim it the correct way? if you do it the incorrect way i believe the crown wheel can touch the case

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

yeah, when i spin the one wheel, the other goes the other way no problem

and when both wheels are on the floor, i can push it, but its very very hard to push, as if the handbrake is on

should have it apart over the weekend and see whats happened

if the crown wheel is touching the side and you have been turning it, i would be cautious of bits of the gear casing in the oil.
