Just a heads up really as I know a few on here have BINIs.

Our Gertrudes 54 reg Cooper S (supercharged) power steering recently crapped out. Reading on the net its a common problem with them to the point where a failure at some point is pretty much something you should expect at some time (crap really).

Anyway as you do I did the usual check fuse and fluid etc but it was well and truly dead.

Next step as I do all our vehicles go and price up bits, reman exchange pump at £160 or reman outright at £220.

Went searching the BINI forums to see if someone had done a how to change guide, any special tools required or any tips to make it easier.

Found out that if the car has service history, MINI UK will often authorise a goodwill payment towards the cost of the parts, leaving the owner to only have to pay the labour and cost of new fluid. Hmm, that sounds OK so we'll have a go at that.

Fired it at the local dealer, end result a bill for £180 which was £50 to diagnose it (robbing cunts you could diagnose it driving it round the fecking carpark) £30 for new PAS fluid, the rest labour. MINI UK stood the cost of the brand new genuine pump at about £480 apparently.

As far as I'm concerned a result, it would have cost me about the same to buy a replacement pump, then I'd have to lay under the car and fit it, get covered in PAS fluid, etc. Plus they washed and hoovered it so she was pleased with that.

So really if you've got the same and the PAS craps out then get it in the dealer. The Sheffield dealer said the car had to have full history, but we didn't take the book in, so I don't know how true that is, and I'm not sure how they could really argue as the scheduled service doesn't touch the PAS pump or fluid.

Ours in intermittent at the moment. It'll work fine for days, then just stop working until the ignition is switched off and back on.

I'll be changing ours though, as there's a few other jobs that need doing at the same time.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

that is a bit of a result Tom, particularly given the age of the car

Expect it to go at the most inconvenient moment, my mums did when she was trying to park.

Cant see why these bini's are so deer, they dont seem to be put together properly, my fiat was more reliable and better built :/

I had this only a month ago tom with mums s works. its now done over 100k but locked up on here coming out of the petrol station. She managed to drive to work but then it did it constantly.
We spoke to bm aswell as id heard the same thing but ours has never been anywhere for service etc so we did the bba reman route.
That was also good service for those in a similar situation as us with the history.
A pump turned up the following day with a re useable box pre paid to send the old one back.
The pump is a simple swap, think it took us hour and half / 2hrs but we wernt rushing lol.

Tom, does it have to be main dealer service history?

My girlfriends dads is a 54 reg Cooper S and his has not long gone. Not sure if his history is all main dealer or not though.

998 t2 ongoing project.
