Well today as I came off the round about changed to 3rd and heard a loud snap-crunch-bang and it locked up and had no drive at all and it locked up :( so stripped most of it down thinking it could have thrown the sc drops out but there perfect so will have the engine out to have a look if its fecked I have a spare so will be going back in tomorow :) will upload pics of the damage, also lots of chunks of metal on the sump plug:(

was it the engine that stopped or the front wheels?
(Could be the diff?)

Dont think so but I force.it out of gear ince turned of and the car would roll the clunk then carry on but hay ho ive got to have it done for l2b *wink*

Either the diff pin or you've taken the teeth of the laygear for third.

Or gearbox bearings? I just stripped mine and I hadnt really even driven it hard and the bearings were fubar, yet the car still drove fine

Will let you know ivegotto pop into work and get the crane the willsee what its done so yeah , was a std box wth 4 pin diff etc but have only been running 7 psi boost ona 7.8:1 comp ratio l

I reckon third gear has gone due to worn bearings.

now I'm no expert on all the gearbox bits but I had this very same issue on my metro years ago; went from 2nd to 3rd on a slip road and wheels just locked up.

Turned out it was one bearings had broken up - would love to tell you which one but it was a long time ago now

its not the worst thing in the world; whip the engine out and see what it is

1st and 2nd gear on the layshaft total munched and stripped bearings seem good

Pictures ???

If 1st / 2nd stripped while changing into 3rd I would look closely at the 1st / 2nd selector fork (is it properly pinned to the selector shaft) and the main selector interlock mechanism (is the ball/sleeve/spring in the right place).

bet its the gears at the flywheel end that have stripped, which are 3rd and the transfer gear to the layshaft.

,,, heres a couple :) it all back running now had a spare box in the garage swapped the diff and centre pick up pipe over and finally put a longer final drive
