Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for some vernier calipers and I want everyones opinion about which ones are the best value. So far I have been looking an Mitutoyo ones (as shown below) as the build quality seems excellant. I just wanted everyones opinions on which calipers they prefer, if there are similar calipers for less money than thats a bonus.

Cheers,
Jake

I just use cheap ones like these, they last fine unless you get shit in them (which would probably go for the mitoyo anyway)

if your doing anything that needs to be more accurate you should be using a mic anyway.

i use the mitutoyo ones. i found my cheaper ones wouldn't always zero where as the mitutoyo ones are always bang on. you can get them for £60 at msc direct when they're on offer.

Ive had a set of Mitutoyo for almost 20 years and it's still working great.

The cheaper ones linked look like the ones Blue Point/Snap On sell.
A friend has had a couple of these. They arent robust, and battery life is very poor.

It seems like the Mitutoyo are too much money, but they really are superb quality. I wouldnt hesitate to buy another if I needed a repalcement

I would go for Mitutoyo.....they have dropped price quite a lot in the last 10 years or so.

It all depends on what your using them for( obviously measuring) but mics can be very limited in what they can be used for. A vernier can measure depth of bores when turning, inside diameters, you can zero then at any size, the scale of things you can measure is a lot greater.

In an ideal world you would have mics for everything, but that would be expensive, especially for the odd job, and when you look at the cost of a decent vernier the can be relied on its worth it's money 10times over.

Thats the thing, I do have some outside mics (0-25mm, 0-1", 1-2" and 2-3"), but the vernier is handy as it does 0-150mm inside, outside and depth.
So the consensus is split between going cheap or going mitutoyo.
Are there any other brands I should consider? I have a moore and wright mic and that seems pretty good, but not as nice as the mitutoyos

Moore and Wright is decent stuff.
I've got a cheap digital caliper for jobbing on the lathe, for anything I need to measure more accurately I have a good vernier caliper e.g. Not digital, or mics.

We have a limit set at work, they get a lot of abuse and seem pretty good.
