Accuspark have just released a new programmable ignition system at a very competitive price of £99!

http://www.accuspark.co.uk/Blackbox.htm

Looks good and no need for a trigger wheel or a million wires to connect
Only problem I can see is the lack of MAP or exact crank position etc.

Thoughts please *wink*

Would go MJ or Nodiz but as a stop gap seems like a good bit of kit to avoid detonation

In all seriousness is it worth a punt? Or just go MJ?

King Gaycharger, butt plug dealer, Sheldon Cooper and a BAC but generally a niceish fella if you dont mind a northerner

I doubt it would be as good as a megajolt, as you say no map sensor and no crank sensor. So it's still only ever going to be as good as a dizzy, just with a custom curve.

Discussion........

Well if I've read it right (the web page is very lacking in real technical detail) first your £99 misses the fact it needs the points replacing with one of their electronic pickups, which they list at £28 - £42 depending on distributor model.

On the positive side, using an electronic pickup will remove the innaccuracy some of the really shit systems create (those which retain the points as the trigger) as there is no fibre/plastic arm, or the points themselves to wear.

But you'll still have all the inaccuracies of backlash in the camchain and helical dizzy drive moving the timing around compared to what you think you have set. Not much maybe, but virtually non-existant on a system that uses a 36:1 wheel on the crank, especially if its attached inboard of the rubber damper.

And, by still using a single coil and a rotor inside the dizzy cap to generate and transmit the spark, the actual spark will be no better than the later standard electronic distributors. ie, nowhere near as good as a coilpack based system.

And you still have the complete dizzy wasting space and putting the HT leads in the standard rain soaked path.

But the "best" bit of the lot is the advance curve is only two dimensional, it has no load input (MAP or TPS), just RPM.

EXCEPT, in the video, after they've locked out the mechanical advance, they appear to re-hook the vacuum advance mechanism up.... so the load input is still there but you haven't a clue what it is and can't do anything about it.

Forget playing with dwell, unless you really know what you are doing you will just burn out coils and the fact they have provided that feature is no replacement for a programmable load input giving a three dimensional map that MJ and all full EMS systems use.

Just my opinion :)

So in a roundabout way it's crap. Ha. Thanks rod great write up. For a split second when I saw it I considered it as it may take me a while to understand mj but now I see its not worth the hassle.

i got nothing but time..

That's handy as otherwise I would have to deem you a BAC and ban you.

I'd say crap is an unfair statement.

Is it ideal for a turbo car ? certainly not.

But is it better than a shitty set of points, or a dizzy with mechanical advance ? And for someone wishing to retain the original look of an old vehicle ? Of course it is.

Stevie, I missed that point completely.
I was just looking from a technical point of view, but I have to agree with you on that esoteric point.

And although I said the electronic pickup may be the only positive thing (ie, compared to points) it looks like they use the very well rounded cam lobes for their pickup to work from..... rather than a new "square" sender mounted on the shaft.

Ohhh dear...

Can see what you mean about the actual teeth/trigger.

But I guess it must produce a consistent and reliable trigger. Again, it's obviously intended for an easy install. Although a more distinct tooth pattern would be nice. Been years since I took a dizzy apart, so not sure how difficult it would be to change the cam part.

Last one I did was a Rover V8, and it's tooth section was actually removable, but it was also electronic already
