nearly got the mini stripped down to a shell, and found a lot more rust than what i was expecting!!! so i thought i'd ring up SPL in dudley and get a quote for an acid dip, good job i wasnt standing, £795+vat for the dip, then £1495+vat for E coat and £300+vat for the doors, bonnet and bootlid, so i wont be going down that road!!

feck that, mine was closer to £600 for the shell and subframes (no boot, bonnet or doors) for a dip, rinse and iron phosphate coating.

I would never do it again. I had one dipped 4 years ago. And u noticed that even though it was rinched afterword the accid remains between the seams.. result paint starts to comme loose there

you can do anything if you set your mind to it...
i rather blow it up winning than keep it together losing.

I've been told it isn't that good either. I know of a chap who had his roof skin badly damaged as they lifted the car out of the tank too quickly.

Weve had a few from there and they do get bashed about !!

A good soda blast should be good enough and spend money on a good epoxy primer

Ring Cal at CRM auto solutions in Dudley, he knows a cheap local place (around your figure) for that sorta thing bud. I think it might be blasting and etch priming.

when we did my shell, my mate knew someone and we got the whole shell and doors done for £120 i think. Maybe £150 that was for sand blasting it.

The bit that interests me about the process though is treating and sealing the bits you can't get to which blasting won't touch

What we found though rob is that the acid still carnt get into the seams or if it does the e coat primer then doesnt so u still end up with rusty joints/seams. Il try find a pic

that makes sense too Rick.

I've been considering options for the woody shell; it is generally in good order and I want to preserve the hidden areas - sills are foam filled but sound and don't need touching so can't use the traditional options of cavity wax, paint etc.

having said that, on the other side of the coin, I quite like the patinated internal paint finish so a dip would screw that anyway!

near Dundee

I spoke to both these companies at the classic motor show last year, SPL had a car that had been dipped and E-coated and i must admit it looked the business.

I echo what Rob has said about the seams and internal box section areas this is something that would worry me but then blasting wont help the seam areas either.
some small holes drilled into inconspicuous places and then filled with waxoil or an equivalent. simply plug the holes when done.

also Rob, Tobee's up near Finavon just done my BSA's mudguards, and made a pretty good job of them too

well, thanks guys, i will look into soda blasting, as i dont really want to paint it again due to not being rinsed properly, plus the expense! i need to find somebody close to me, as my mate has a transit flatbed i can borrow, but cant travel far, ( i dont want to take the pee)

here if its blasted to bare metal and then welded up we tend to spray it in zinga cathodic paint. and then a primer on top. the cathodic paint is metal based and chemicly attaches to the shell. (only on bare metal) so it works a bit as being galvanised. it locks the metal from air and offers itselve up first if rust would appear. (hope i used the correct therms here... )
