Just found loads of play in my steering rack, which is why it didnt go in a straight line at Avon the other day. Trouble is mk1 racks are NLA so what do people recommend?

I seriously doubt it!

I recommend fitting another rack or fixing the one you have.

I would definately pull your one apart and have a look, chances are repairing that will be better than a recon one,

what could be an option is getting a rack shipped over from Aus, the Ausie cars had a better rack with a bigger diameter rack bar in.... although that might be a bit heavy for you!...

or maybe look into adaping a racing rack to fit and shed a bit more weight.... expensive though.

Got it out and stripped down, the linear bush has broken up, must just be age. Will see if replacement is available

I seriously doubt it!

Had the same. I made a buch in hmmm eratalon (not sure how to write in in English. .. its hard white stuf looks bit like plastic and sometimes they make small wheels and stuff out of it) tappedit in rreassembled the whole thing and no problems so far... it's only done a few weeks now so not sure how good it will be.

you can do anything if you set your mind to it...

I actually made a couple of these years ago from delrin, never got round to fitting them though, think I binned them in the end.

Going OT slightly, what normally wears in a steering rack to require replacement?
I have a metro style recon one in my car, but would like to go back to the proper rack

Bin the rubbish ratio MK1 rack, fit a quick rack, but remember to change the steering arms or you'll defy Mr. Ackerman.

Talking of steering racks. My steering arm tie rod snapped on my mx5 this morning, nearly hit an on coming car!
