A bit of a random one! Lol

Does anyone know if you can still buy the old school 80's style disc wheels or just the disc inserts?

Me and a mate at work have decided to build a Bugatti 1/2 scale replica soap box, for a local soap box race next year and we want some disc wheels for it. We're looking for 12 or 14" sized ones.

I've searched and searched but obviously technology has moved on and all I get is disc brake wheels come up! *hehe!*

Ah yeah that's the sort of thing, but hoping for something that'll just fix straight onto a bike wheel. As a kid I always knew them as disc wheels, but is there another name for them?

Weren't they on the old Raleigh extremes?

Might be worth picking up a bike of ebay as I doubt they will be expensive

Here's a tip, make sure it has 4 wheels! Here's the video from goodwood this year where we ran a soapbox, you can see us fall over at 1.15ish, wasn't me driving. The video was from the Saturday and I was supposed to be driving it on the Sunday! Although to be fair I did have a big off while practising, according to the speedo was doing about 60mph, which was pretty terrifying

We had 20" road racing wheels, where an absolute pain to replace, with 23mm road bike tyres for a hand cycle

That looks awesome! What was it made of?

We were talking about doing the goodwood one too. As we're there as support each year.

heres a tip those moon discs are deadly lol

my bro had solid metal ones imported from america that where like hubcaps on his mk1 veedub caddy pickup

needless to say going 60 on a local A road, one vacates the premises and starts bouncing toward oncoming traffic

EASILY could have killed someone but thankful came to rest in a hedge after clearing a zafira people carrier going the other way by mm

never again haha

Ours was actually fairly low tech, massively heavy steel frame with added ballast for a higher top speed, with a fibre glass shell that was made back in 2000, no doubt if it had been made this year it would have been carbon due to the facilities we have. But the wheels were so light, with tiny little tyres at 150psi, that thing was stupidly quick, and near impossible to drive due to the weight. Plus to get in or out you had to undo about 12 live-locks. Also it has side wheels that come out of hatches on the side when you pull a lever inside.

First mini turbo to get in the 12's & site perv

Herefordshire

I had a Raleigh Extreme!!!!! This is probably the one lustful item I owned as a child.
6 speed shimano sis indexed gears, wheel discs that fooled people into thinking it was Chris boardman's lotus bike.
Over tightening and snapping the M6 bolt holding on the front brake and my dad running over it with the Datsun.

Ahhhh the good old days

Just to add a little bit of insider knowledge...... If you want the wheels to go real quick, if they are old ish cup and cone hubs, fit ceramic bearings if you can afford them, and then buy a pit of shimano special grease. It will have hardly any drag at all.
