I've just come across line-x. It's mainly a US company but they do have a dealer in the UK. It's mainly for truck bed and van liners, but they can do absolutely anything pretty much in almost any colour. It's basically a heated plastic sprayed onto the car in whatever thickness you want and dries in seconds. If you look on the linex uk site they've even done the complete body of a mini!

my concerns with this sort of thing is can be brittle and chip/ crack, letting and holding water between the finish and the metalwork? all a bit like powdercoating?

It's not like a hard plastic I don't think, it's a bit like rubbery plastic. So I assume its flexible. On 26th Jan, 2012 Tom Fenton said:

looks good, i would personally want to replace all rusty panels, seal them and coat them with a zinc primer etc.
