I've just come across line-x. It's mainly a US company but they do have a dealer in the UK. It's mainly for truck bed and van liners, but they can do absolutely anything pretty much in almost any colour. It's basically a heated plastic sprayed onto the car in whatever thickness you want and dries in seconds. If you look on the linex uk site they've even done the complete body of a mini!
Now the end result is slightly textured, but it can be sanded flat and overpainted. I'm just thinking about this in the future of my build, it's practically bombproof stuff, completely waterproof and will basically seal the bodyshell in! Not sure on cost but they claim it's cheaper than a paintjob?

my concerns with this sort of thing is can be brittle and chip/ crack, letting and holding water between the finish and the metalwork? all a bit like powdercoating?

I'd be a lot happier with a flexible sealant

It's not like a hard plastic I don't think, it's a bit like rubbery plastic. So I assume its flexible.

Ithink this is the stuff they tested on mythbusters a couple of years ago.
sprayed one half of a car with the stuff
and crashed it a bit to compare results....then coated some wood with the stuff to see if it made a difference against C4....
